AMD Next Generation ATI Radeon Eyefinity Technology

crysis 2? on eyefinity 3x 30"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04dMyeMKHp4&fmt=22

Driver version 8.66 (Catalyst 9.10) or above is required to support ATI Eyefinity technology and to enable a third display you require one panel with a DisplayPort connector.
ATI Eyefinity technology works with games that support non-standard aspect ratios which is required for panning across three displays.
TV Tuner required, sold separately.
Linux support scheduled to be enabled via a future ATI Catalyst™ driver release.

from the original amd eyefinity page... pretty much confirming launch before oct

had to bump this, to keep things in perspective...Well done ATI , I actually thought NV would have had this simple way of using multi-displays ;( done and dusted. It's nice but I WANT the game devs to build in fully customizable multi-display support....and then I WANT a new, decent game to play it on!!!!!!!!! These console ports are killing me!!!!! Sorry all, rant is ova...:cool::cool::cool:

I remember about 5 yearsago there was this boutique type company who overcharged for hardware who had 3x1 and 6x1 displays that took care of the bezels. It was several lcd screens all incrusted in one big frame.

The website was go-l.com but I can't remember the name of the company. Last news I recall was Steve telling the company was Kaput.

I found this on the laptop forums. Anyone remembers the Hollywood laptop with its SSD Hard disk for 5000 USD?

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread14210.html

Don't know if the monitor thing was a scam too.

I'm curious, during the presentation did ATI/AMD give any recommendation of the sizes of monitors use what's the "optimal" viewing distance? Like with HDTV's. Something like a 50" HDTV, recommended viewing distance is like 7' to 10'. I'm just curious with the addition of 3 monitors, if a viewing distance was talked about to maximumize the experience due to pheriphal vision?

To Enduring Warrior,

I'm wondering if Alienware is doing anything with their triple front projection monitor anymore? I remember when they were touting crossfire with ATI cards before Crossfire was ever announced. Would seem to be the perfect time to release their front projection monitor if it's still in development/existance

I would imagine you'd want to sit close enough that the monitors fill your vision center to peripheral. That's where I'd wanna sit, anyway.

He, I couldn't tell you. Don't know what happened with that after Dell bought them. I also couldn't tell if that's the most cost effective solution because go-l monitors were quite expensive. Bet then there's someone who already figured it out for us while using projector,

I can't find the link but I remember Steve posting it a while back ago. A guy created a screen with the shape of a sphere to project Crysis on it.

BTW this problem has already been figured out by the military. you can take a look at any of the Discovery Channel programs about their Flight simulators or the traveling America's Army circus. Both use multiple displays for creating a surrounding image.

Those simulators also cost millions ;)

I started toying around with SoftTH the other day, which isn't bad for free, but I have a feeling the mainstream support from AMD on this will be awesome. I've been playing L4D like this every night for the last week..and it rules. :)

l4d3mon1.jpg

The biggest disadvantage of SoftTH is is has no means of compensating for the gap in space between monitors, as can easily be seen by your screen shot. The analog versions of THtoGo had this same issue, but an app was created for the digital version. It is obvious from the demo's that ATi understands this and has it working as it should. No mismatched frames.

Just started to watch the Cry-Engine 3 demo and it obvious in that instance that they have no panel removal system.
Can any one who attended the demo on the carrier comment on this? I know if I was there it would have been the single most important question to get answered.

I haven't had a chance to catch up on the thread, but I just wanted to say that personally, I was very impressed. It is incredibly hard to translate the experience of gaming on 3 or 6 or 24 displays through pictures or video, it is something you just have to experience in person. When they brought us back into the room with the 6 display setup, and Dirt 2 running on it with ONE GPU, my jaw was on the floor, I was speechless. That was my experience.

Ouch, I think I spoke way too soon. I have watched a few demo's more and am seeing much the same. Bezel gap, misalignment. I think the ultra high rez and the extreme number of monitors has masked this problem. It wouldn't effect multi projector users like I hope to be, but makes it all but worthless for multi LCD monitor gaming if your a visual perfectionist. Matrox digital THtogo is still king FTM.

I think its funny how you say the Matrox THG is better then ATI's new tech. I mean you dont even own the new ATI card to try it.

Explain to me how a youtube video can make you come to that conclusion. I mean shit look what Brent said. He was amazed by it?...why?...cause he accually played it, and saw it first hand.

Real thing > Youtube video

Are you saying you don't see bezel gap misalignment on the various video's posted? Sure Brent was amazed, multi monitors is frickin awesome in almost every sense, especially the Dirt2 demo with seamless projectors. But the video's that show bezel gap misalignment pretty much ruin it for me. Hopeful that ATi has a software fix soon.

Yeah, there's clearly some gap in there, but I would be amazed if they didn't eventually include a feature to reduce or eliminate it for those that want to. For FPS I would want to remove it, but in some RTS type games, I wouldn't want to compensate for the spacing.

As someone who's been running multiple displays for years now, I'm just happy as can be to finally see some real mainstream support for it. AMD will very likely win my next purchase, and future purchases, assuming the green team doesn't catch up with something better (and I really hope they do, competition ftw).

I mean the thing is, they were showing New video cards, not even released in public, with beta drivers running everything.

Even Kyle himself said they do not support CF yet with the 6 monitors going.

Just give ATI time to iron this shit all out. From what I have been reading, they have until October 22-23rd to get things ironed out.

The bezels are Annoying yes...but that is not ATI's fault at all.

Either way I still think that its better then THG. You dont have to pay anything to get it to work. It just comes with the Video card...no buying 3rd party software etc to get it to work.

I am very amazed by this technology...and all I saw was video's. Remember beta drivers suck arse sometimes.

Shitty

For anyone new to multi screen gaming, and I hope there will be more then a few thanks to ATi/AMD, here is a link to Matrox bezel management software, and what it does. I hope this is just a temporary issue with ATi and they have a system in place soon. But I'm not so sure it is something fixable in software. It wasn't with Matrox, as they had to release new HW.

Fingers crossed.

I cannot find where I read it, But there is a quote from ATI saying they are working on fixing the issue threw drivers......ill keep lookin

Edit: Found it, was on techreport Doesnt say much but they do mention it....althought doesnt say if ATI/AMD said it.

"The company may also incorporate a feature in its graphics drivers to compensate for the visual offsets caused by bezels."

Why would I want 6 30" monitors (or 6 of any size) with a grid of bezels disrupting the image, when I can just spend less on a single large display or projector and not have the bezels plus better performance?

It's a gimmick just like Matrox developed, and has no real use for gaming. Workstation productivity? Yes, but not gaming.

First, your single large display offers nowhere near the field of view, or associated immersion characteristics of six 30" displays orriented in any fashion. I'd bet that a majority of posters in this thread would tend to agree.

Next, a gimmick to you......is simply stated, a better/more reliable option for me. It is a fact that bezels will shrink (obviously), and displays will be produced that support these resolutions in native posture. You fundamentally appear to be arguing that the ability to support 60 inches of gaming pleasure, is infact a step backwards when it comes to present/future display technology. How you game, is not necessarily how I game.

I don't have the wallspace for a projector, and a single 30" display isn't enough.

3X displays, is an amazing gaming experience. The bezels go largely invisable to the eye, as you focus on the center monitor. 6 displays isn't a great solution for fps or Sim games, as the center of action lie's directly on a bezel. For MMO's or RTS 5 screens might be a sensation. If you don't like 6 screens I think you wouls love 3 screens if you saw it in action. Depends what game style of gamer you are.

Mainstream market would have no clue as how to take advantage of this technology.. or even look into it. I consult for a living.. Do you know how many people just Gasp when I tell them I can set them up with a pc with 2 graphics cards? They can barely grasp the idea of one. Now if you said that the average gamer might be interested in this.. again..you would be wrong.

for example the largest mmo in north america in wow... Folks would assume that oh.. gamers = Tech gurus. I run at alot pug groups and I always ask oh whats your pc.. I can name on one hand the invididuals who were running custom built gaming pcs. The rest were store bought machines.

Great technology yes... but its not as much a game changer for the mainstream market as the speed and graphical detail it offers over current technology. That is the sad reality.

Ask them this:
If they had the option to use their screen and their friends screen, connect them on a single computer and run a game with all the screens, would it be interesting?

I bet many of them wouldn't want to give the screens back to their friends after trying triplehead!

They have been able to make multigpu consumer pc's and laptops.
They have been able to push alot of tech into the consumer market, some might try and sell this and might be a big hit, or not.

It doesnt cost me anything that they bundle it :p(ati eyefinity)

I could see using this with a three monitor setup for gaming. One of the biggest thing I could see this used for is military and a cheap good solution for multiplexing.

Very Very Interesting to see the difference in that URL. When it's on, you do get a sense that the bezels dissappear. Very Very Interesting... On another note. Will LED based monitors eliminate most of the bezel? Or the back lighting really has nothing to do with the thickness of the bezels?

I actually like the fact that the gap isn't compensated for. To me it makes the scene flow a lot better.

TRUTH... I have been saying the same thing since this stuff broke. Interesting technology; no doubt!!! The sad reality is the people on this site and the average day folk is like probably a 50:1 ratio, probably even larger. Does this get all of our geek blood pumping? Hell yeah! But the sad reality is that we are such a minority in the PC gaming realm that this will always be used as a "feature/niche" then an actual marketing tool to the average consumer.

A very interesting thing over at that Widescreen Gaming Forum:
Each card (single GPU) was responsible for rendering one quadrant of the overall display, and they were actually running separate instances of game to do so. This was not a crossfire setup, and I was told that CF support has not yet been integrated with Eyefinity.
If that's the case could you in theory just have two cards in your system and have one running 2 Monitors and one card running 1 Monitor? Or is that not a possible scenerio?

How many people use 2X displays? That feature has been available for the good part of a decade. Few use it, but it isn't hard to enable if you want it. With 3X displays there is a big difference. If offers something gamers have always wanted. Larger display space for greater immersion. And it is as difficult as plugging in a 3rd monitor. It won't be long before we see mainstream gaming systems offered with 3 screen packages. If you offered a lot of the gamers on this site a choice of 3x22" displays or one larger 26" display for the same price. Guess what?

Believe what you want, but when things don't match to our eyes it is distracting for most of us. I think if you experience some actual gameplay with bezel management removal your opinion would change. Its like looking out an old fashioned windowpane. With bezel management the world exists behind the panes. You just have to tilt your head left or right to see what the pane covered. Without bezel management there is a gap in space for no logical reason to the mind. The scenery just stops then continues on an inch or so over. Hardly conducive for better flow.

Thanks for the link Zeraza.

"When I spoke with the ATI dev presenting this display he explained that the entire frame was closer to 63 megapixels--rather than the 55 noted on the table card--because the GPUs were actually rendering all the scenery hidden by the bezels but cutting out those pixels with bezel management. As you can see, this bezel management does not "shrink" the image towards the center of the overall display--making it far superior to the TH2Go method. It remains to be seen whether Eyefinity on Windows will offer this feature or not. I was told that Eyefinity GPUs *should* have bezel management, but based on the displays I saw tonight it appears that it is not yet implemented into Eyefinity for Windows "

This explains why I saw it in some demo's and not others. Lets hope it isn't a DX11 issue.

This is definitely exciting. I glossed over it yesterday, but now that I've had time to read the whole preview, this has the potential to be the most interesting development in PC gaming in the last 10 years. Not only will this drive card sales, but also panel manufacturers will race to have the thinnest bezel and best off axis viewing.

Kyle, is this new thin bezel Samsung panel out yet? Did they give a model number?

IIRC he recalled the monitors will be available by Christmas time..

Which would give you a better 3D gaming experience and overall value. One 27" LCD at 1920x1080 for $500 or three 22" LCDs at 1680x1050 for $200 each?

With this technology requiring no other peripherals any more (read: TH2GO) i'd bet 3x 1680x1050 (5040x1050) would be far superior to a single 1920x1080 monitor.
