AMD grows market share

AMD has been on the blower to point out that figures from Mercury and Jon Peddie Research show that it has been growing market share for the fourth consecutive quarter.

Mercury Research said that AMD gained three points of unit volume share in Q1 2016.

In total discrete graphics, AMD gained 4.8 share points to 34.2 per cent of market by unit volume (based on Mercury Research). In desktop discrete sector, AMD saw a 7.3 share point increase, rising to 29.9 per cent market share.

More to the article. Go check it out!

Found an Anandtech article on it with a ton of information in it!

This is good. Regardless of what vendor you use, we need competition. I hope Vega is good.

Well, good news once again. Also, I see the regular non AMD users have shown up. :D More market share means more money, more research and perhaps more market share as time goes on, we will see.

not really, not at all unless you analyze that AMD gained 7% market share due increased shipments, at the same time nvidia decreased shipment in 30%.. that mean that the total amount of cards in the market decrease proportionally.. of course the 30% AMD market share are very good news, but what im hoping is them to be able to sustain that market size not only in shipments but in the installed user base which is what really matter at the end, there is where the money is.

More marketshare doesn't mean more money that is what the last quarters numbers show lol. AMD total sales didn't go up to get that marketshare. nV's total sales drop is what gave AMD its marketsahre increase. So effectively nothing AMD did gave them anything for their bottom line

whats the use of having 50% marketshare if the total market only sells 2 units :), taking it to ridiculous levels but just to get the point across.

And to note, AMD didnt gain anything in revenue. Nvidia gained a lot. So AMD increased shipments while not getting more revenue. In other words, they exchanged more expensive parts for cheaper parts in greater volume. The parts we talk about here is really low end parts. 350 series and below, GT740 series and below. Nvidia dropped the low end after Kepler. Besides 2 rare OEM parts. The lowest Maxwell desktop cards are GTX750 and the lowest Pascal desktop cards will be GTX1050. With the possible exception of some rare OEM version.

From the CFO.
GPU ASP remained flat sequentially and decreased year‐over year. The year‐over‐year decrease was primarily driven by lower desktop GPU ASP.
Computing and Graphics operating loss was $81 million, compared to an operating loss of $70 million in Q1 2016, primarily due to lower revenue

I see we also needed the rerelease of the news as the stock issue is finishing.

yeah, that's exactly why increased shipments isn't exactly a truly market portion of the installed user base...

Not of the installed obviously. But its clear who the buyers are. Its people buying an ultra cheap laptop for desktop that got a GPU thrown into it for value add. Something in the bottom barrel range.

Nvidia seems to have dropped this segment after Kepler, and rightfully so. A desktop GPU starts at ~100$, not ~20-30$.

AMD’s ‘Zen’: Intel Has the Better Chip, Says Citi

Lets get real and be realistic about AMD. Zen will not over take Kaby Lake in Ferbuary. Competitor to Skylake, sure. Taking Intel on full tilt: not going to happen. Intel is too far along in the 14nm space where as AMD can't really get going with GloFo(slow start I mean) and IS actively seeking other manufactures. Now, really want to put water on this simmering fire? Nvidia Jen is making a BIG announcement at CES and is HEADLINING it for the first itme ever. I fully expect a Volta announcement for May like was rumored. Vega will just be coming out Febuary at that time to compete with 1070/1080. Another reason I said no 1080Ti, too close to Volta and no reason with AMD this behind. This isn't fan speculation or rumor, its happening right in front of us. AMD will hold the low end while trying to fight at mid level, stuggling to get to high end. Unless they get a big boost in R&D from another business/investor to help push them to the next level, they WILL NOT be overtaking either of their competitors. Yes we need AMD after all the shady crap Nvidia has pulled over the years, but I wish they could get the cash infusion to push them over the top and Consoles are not that. Specially losing Nintendo. I had the first Athlon cartridges based CPU's when they came out, went to T-bird, Barton, Athlon 64, but once I switched to Core2 E8400, my system always seemed to run smoother with Intel, no real hiccups at all. I switched back to a 6 Phenom 1045(I think that was the number) just to end up back Intel and Nvidia. Don't know if I can ever spend my money on AMD again, sure would like to.

kabylake 15% faster than skylake? I have a bridge to sell you as well. Sounds like a fuckin fanboy talking. I have a 6700k. Clock for clock kaby lake is not any faster than skylake. It is only faster because its clocked higher.

statments like my system runs smoother with intel? If he is telling me turning the computer on, opening up an app and browsing the internet he can tell a difference between amd and intel well I don't know about that. lol, vague statements like that make someone sound biased. Give some specific scenarios like gaming and rendering.

If Intel baked a 15% speed performance boost into their chips every generation then I would have upgraded 4 years ago. The 3% and 5% upgrades in performance over the years have cumulatively added up to 15%+ though depending on usage. None of it came in one generation. Intel went for power usage savings over raw performance long ago and I stopped caring about a CPU upgrade. If I went with a Kaby Lake build, the first thing I would do is slap a water block on it and OC the hell out of it until it crashes. Back it off a tad and call it a day. I'm not running a server farm; I'm an enthusiast!

That Barrons blog is weird. I'd love for Kaby Lake to get a flat 15% raw performance boost over Skylake though. It would pique my interest in an upgrade. 15% in one benchmark and I'm like Zzzz.

In the mobile segment, Kaby pretty much delivers 15% or more. In the desktop, specially the top 7700K. Its more like 5%.

Q2 Q1
AMD 2,820,000 2,717,000
Nvidia 6,600,000 9,200,000

"Moreover, the company decided to clear out some of the inventory of older model cards amid the launch of Pascal-based GeForce 1070 and 1080 graphics cards, according to JPR. This greatly affected actual shipments and market share of NVIDIA: unit sales decreased by 14% YoY and by 28% QoQ, whereas market share declined to 70%."
