Ok, this seems to be a common issue but I haven't found a solid cure for it yet.

Different monitors, cables and even computers make no difference. Intermittently, the monitor will simply blank out for a few seconds, then turn back on.

Sometimes it does it once a day. Sometimes it will do it 10 times in a minute. It's frustrating as hell.

The current card is a 290x and the monitor is a Acer 38" Ultrawide.

A different monitor was tried. Several different (certified) DP 2.1 cables were tried. It even did it when the older HD7970 was installed.

Hell, it even did it in the old computer before I built the new one !!!

WTH ?

Try an extension cord to a different outlet on a different circuit.

Use a gender bender from a different port.

Maybe video card is just defective or has some cooling issues.

I had this with 2 new MSI RX 470s and had to switch to Sapphire to get rid of the issue. I dont know either was it was. I read rolling back drivers might help and power cycling the monitor, but it didn't work for me.

What are your idle clocks? It reads like idle clocks are too low for the resolution.

I'll take a look.

Can that be changed ?

Considering it only seems to do it in 2D, out may be in to something.

Weird. What brand and length cables have you tried? I have a 290x and kept having the same issues trying to do a 15ft run to a 4k screen with 2 different cables (AmazonBasics and Ugreen), but this Cable Matters cable has worked fine.

My experience is that the displayport ports on recent graphics cards are not a terribly great fit to the connector on the end of many cables, leading to this problem. Short of trial and error with a bunch of different brands of cables, I'm not sure what to recommend, but I'll say that I've had this same thing happen with both a GTX 1080 and a 290X, and the solution seems to usually be to wiggle the cable at the card end a little, and it eventually stops doing this.

Several of the more notable brands on Amazon. All 10 ft.

Just got in an Acell to try.

I may have found a fix. In the monitor I turned off auto switch and DCE Control (I think that's what it was called) and I haven't seen the issue since.

It was very intermittent so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.

Had this problem with my 290. I had to flash a custom BIOS where I disabled the Ultra Low Power mode. I can't remember exactly how I did it, as it's years old. But it was a utility you downloaded that allowed you to take a BIOS file and tick things on or off. I set the lowest power mode to the middle modes MHz/power settings.

The issue was with the card going in and out of ULP mode and when I searched, it was quite common.

If that gets it fixed for you that's great. If not there is a process to modify the idle clocks, though I'm not sure these days with wattman.

You can also tackle the low clocks issue via the gpu bios.

Good info. Thanks !

So, I found the perfect, permanent fix for this.

An nVidia 1080ti :)

I can't believe AMD still hasn't done anything about this issue.

I found windows 8 / 10 helped over 7, but yeah - have this still occasionally on my 6870.
