Question for you guys (googling has resulted in some confusing results.)

I recently won an AMD A8 processor. I've been Intel for years, so I have zero clue what this CPU is all about. What would be the closest equivalent to Intel?

My current rig is aging (in sig) so do you think I should just use this CPU and start upgrading? Or am I better off selling it and going i7?

Well, it destroys your current setup, only because your current setup is what, 3 generations old now? So if you want to go the ultra cheap route that's an option, buy a board and some RAM to go with it and I imagine you'll be happy. The integrated GPU in the A series AMD chips is apparently pretty nice as well. That said, it's shit compared to just about any modern (Ivy or Sandy Bridge) Intel quad or better.

I've dealt with a current gen AMD top end (FX 8120) chip and Intel's low-end-of-the-high-end 2500K... and I'd take the 2500K any day of the week. No contest.

Really depends on what you use your computer for.
 
If you can hold out just a little longer (4-6 months, so not a "little" but no an eternity either) Haswell is coming with a completely new socket. Sadly both current (2011 and 1156) are dead in the water now. If you must upgrade now they're good choices and Z77 in particular is a great performer, but nothing new and interesting is going to be coming out for them.
 
Something new is always around the corner. If it were me, I'd use that AMD processor to build a sweet HTPC then build a separate system based on an Intel platform for gaming. Assuming that's your main goal.
 
Considering that DDR3 RAM prices have been going up slightly over the past few months, I'd recommend just doing an interim upgrade (new mobo and RAMc + reusing that AMD CPU) to tide you over till all of the potential quirks or delays with Haswell are over with. IMO, the small amount of money you're gonna spend is well worth the expenditure.
 
If you're a gamer, sell it and get a sandy/ivy, it'll last you a very long time. If for whatever reason you wanted a Haswell, sell your rig then and add some extra cash to get it, I'd imagine those to be a bit expensive.
 
Keep it, ditch the integrated GPU for a decent bang-for-buck GPU, why not get 16gb of RAM if they say RAM is going up in price? Then call it a day...
