Henri Richard, AMD’s VP of sales and marketing, addressed the crowd at the Red Hat Summit, saying that AMD-ATi is committed to fixing its Linux driver issues. There isn’t a whole lot of information other than this blog post. Thanks to Ed Cabarles for the link.

The ATI marketing guy on stage (Henri Richard) at the Red Hat Summit just committed to fixing the ATI problems with open source. To paraphrase “most people are worried about what they will lose…IP, etc…we’re worried about what we can win.” They know it’s a problem and they are committed to fixing it.

I think they have some bigger things to commit themselves to first, but whatev.

yea, like getting the 2900xt released! Thats their #1 priority then their barcelona chips and then the drivers for linux can be fixed later.

Like what? Bad Linux support really puts a lot of people off ATI. That's their biggest issue right now, other than the omnipresent "get more fast cards released" issue.

You people do realize that ATI has a separate Software and Hardware division, right? They can't cannibalize software engineers to make them work on hardware, or in this case send them to TSMC to get more wafers out.

AMD has multiple deparments. Working on better linux drivers isn't going to have an effect whatsoever on the manufacture and release of their hardware. And yes, it can potentially be a factor in getting them out of the red since linux users will be able to buy and use AMD's graphics cards in linux at their full potential. More sales = getting out of the red sooner.

Their biggest issue is bad Linux support? I'm pretty sure it's their chips and video cards being outperformed. Even if they supported Linux as heavily as Windows, they still have to get people to buy their product, and that's the problem keeping them in the red in the first place. Too many people prefer C2D and NVIDIA, with due cause.

Don't get me wrong. I'm rooting for AMD to pull it together. I hope their focus on Linux drivers doesn't come with a sacrifice elsewhere.

Both sides are connected, and software developers could be optimizing new drivers for new technology. Preliminary HD2900 discussions haven't been promising, even though it's not officially out yet. Barcelona, however, is quite exciting.

I don't think providing better support for Linux is going to divert resources from ATI.

Now, as far as C2D is concerned, well...it's good to see Intel get up off the canvas. It's the first time since the Athlon was released that gave anyone a reason to use an Intel chip. I'm sure AMD enjoys competition again.

They've been doing that, probably for over a year now. I'm pretty sure they know a whole lot better than you weather increased work on windows drivers would significantly help their performance.

bah...let the 1% of sales to Linux users go Intel. One less hassle for no return for AMD that way. When was the last time ATI made money off a Radeon 9250?

Lousy Linux support is why I tend to avoid ATI cards on systems that will run Linux, which is several computers. I have no problem buying ATI cards on systems that will run Windows only.

Good, because in the relatively new future, I will be using Linux.

I don't buy ATI cards because w/ Nvidia I know that down the line, I can turn the older hardware into a Linux box and enjoy superior Linux support and drivers. nvidia still releases occasionally legacy drivers update for cards as old as the TNT2.
