According to a Reuters report, Amazon is in talks to venture into the ticketing business (auto-start video warning). It is currently seeking partnership with venue owners as Ticketmaster has a stranglehold in the industry. Previously, Amazon has sought partnership with Ticketmaster in an attempt to get a foothold into the business of selling tickets. The company has found some success outside of the U.S., selling tickets in U.K.

Hopefully, this will lead to some more competitive pricing as we can all agree that the some of these ticket fees are outrageous right?

Ticketing would likely make money for Amazon, which has a patchy record of profitability. Ticketmaster generated $1.6 billion in revenue from initial sales of tickets to events in 2016, according to estimates by research firm BTIG. That figure does not include revenue from the reselling of tickets, which BTIG estimates at $250 million.

Competition....till the competition goes under against the might of Amazon. Meet the new boss...same as the old boss. Blah blah blah.

Enjoy it while you can I guess.

Good. Fuck Ticket Master. Last time I bought tickets from them cost me like $140 for $80 tickets. I was charged a service fee and parking for every ticket I bought. I bought 4 and was taking the same care. Why was I forced to pay $25 for each person?!?!

make this shit happen amazon, ticketmaster is a friggin joke.

i don't think amazon would outright kill ticketmaster unless they refused to compete and just kept charging the same bogus fees in which point they'll kill themselves.

We can only hope....

This is like cheering for Hitler or Stalin to win. Either one you pick you feel dirty that they did.

Except much like Walmart vs. Amazon, there isn't going to be a clear winner (at least not anytime soon). That means the real winner in the meantime is the consumer buying from them, as it drives down prices.

I completely agree, and it's the reason why I haven't been to a concert in 5+ years. I saw a band I semi-liked was touring in my city. I looked at the ticket cost... ~$18.50 each. Okay, fine, not amazing but I'm willing to pay $40 for 2.

Then I got to the fees... oh the fucking fees. The cost to distribute tickets.... They deem that the fees necessary is $12.50 each.... nearly the cost of the tickets themselves for fucks sake. Are you high?

Needless to say, I didn't end up going. Fuck it. It's just like movie theaters, I'll buy a speaker set and create my own damn concert over paying that much.

Here's what's funny about this: the UK has reportedly urged a boycott of Amazon, while it is busy raking in nearly $2 billion in ticket sales there. Amazon is so ingrained in daily existence in the western world (I'm guilty too), people have to basically stop participating in retail, period, if they want to effectively boycott Amazon.

Bring it on. Ticketmaster has been fleecing us for way too long. Competition is good.

I wish more things would be billed like gas. The tax and the cost of fuel and all associated fees are in the total. So when I go pump gas for $2.56/gallon, I know it's going to be $2.56. Not $2.56 + tax + convenience fee + fuel surcharge + cleanup fee + hazardous fee + I feel like it fee.

Will this do anything in regards to tickets being sold out in minutes only to find them on StubHub or similar for 2x or 3x as much a few minutes later?

If amazon cuts the fees and doesn't engage in "reselling" of tickets by ticket services that are nearly wholly owned subsidiaries of frikin ticketmaster, it'll be an improvement.

Nope. People will just set their bot on ticket Master and Amazon to buy them up asap.

At this point, any competition is welcomed. Not only does Ticketmaster have a Monopoly on most ticket sales, they also own/control the resale venues and make profits twice. It behooves Ticketmaster to sell their tickets to private "non-affiliated" resale companies. Despite what they say about bots, etc, that's a majority of where the tickets are sold before they even go on sale to the general public.

With ticketmaster the fees add up to the price of the ticket.
Sadly they all do that too, smithtix which is somewhat local to me charges about 1/4 of the ticket price with added fees too.

Nice, $25 ticket! Check out..... $52. What. The. Fuck?! Not going. Not worth it. I've missed several shows because I was ready to buy 4 tickets (Family) for $100, but when those fees hit, it was closer to $200. I bailed.

I really hope Amazon doesn't charge me a convenience fee to print my own tickets. :)

Really, I'd buy from Amazon just so I could avoid Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster is pretty scummy and just a real shitty company.

It may surprise you to know that Ticketmaster (TM) does not always keep all of this Service charge/Parking/Facility Fee revenue. Often times these amounts are negotiated rates between TM, the Venue, and the Producer with each getting a cut. It's a way each party can make more money, and they get to advertise $XX ticket prices.

Yeah, but the difference is that Amazon is a company who doesn't appear to care about actually making money, whereas Ticketmaster will charge you massive fees because Ticketmaster.

I know but they still making bank. Not many people go to concerts alone. Asking for $20 per ticket for parking was insane. Might not be all ticket Master fault but they still making bank off the parking too.

Ticketmaster should be shitting its pants atm.

This should to be popcorn worthy to watch unfold! =)

That is until all other competition is crushed underfoot.

Competition is good. I welcome this.

I never understood why the Ticketmaster - LiveNation merger was allowed to go ahead. It was bad before that, but got even worse afterwards.

It's the same thing now with Comcast tix (formerlly Paciolan), and AXS from AEG.

I refuse to buy from ticketmaster, seriously fuck their markups. I'd rather try to get tickets at the gate then pay their prices. Same will happen with Amazon if their markup is the same.

Ticketmaster has no competitor either, this is opening up competition again. But then again I always bought straight from the seller or got tickets at the gate.
