Amazon’s Windowshop Beta

Reminds me of the Cooliris firefox plugin, which coincidentally lets you search amazon in a in a similar way.

While this is cool, I kinda wished it was HTML/Ajax as opposed to Flash.

I agree. This is a pretty neat idea for sure. Like nsx241 said, it kind of reminds me of Cooliris as well.

Very nice. Pleasant and easily navigable interface. I like it!

How do you do Amazon through CoolIris/PicLens?

lol i have been playing way too many computer games, it said to use the arrow keys and i am hitting the wads keys lol

they need to do some serious optimizing if they want the average home user to enjoy this. This site was great on my gaming rig but very laggy on my spare PC.

But all in all they have the right idea how the store should look =)

saucesome, though does remind me of cooliris as others have mentioned, plus windows media center (the online part where you can browse for tv shows and stuff)

Now if they had it to explore something other than mainstream pap it would be great!

Besides the fact that it looks terrible on my 24" monitor (all images pixelated), it's usability is horrible...

But it's great to waste your time looking for stuff... :p

Wow, very slick! I'm seldom impressed by any kind of flash shtick like that, much less a storefront interface, but it loads so fast and seamlessly... They need to add in some personalized recommendations and such though; but contrary to a lot of opinions out there, Amazon does get it... They're definitely making a long-term play for iTunes' market and they know they can't just sell music/media like they sell anything else.

It's pretty cool but it's only useful for people who want to buy something but don't know what they want to buy.

Whenever I buy something on Amazon, I always come to the website knowing what I want

There's actually an Amazon search box for Firefox for anyone who hasn't seen it before... Direct Amazon and IMDb searches ftw.

There goes 2.25 hours i wont get back... went through every interesting book outline they had..

Oh, and saw a trailer for a Pan's Labyrinth-style film called The Fall, that made me want to get the film...

Yeah.

Needs WASD support, definatly. that way I can browse one handed and still operate the mouse.

Oh, and inb4 "one handed" jokes.

Yep. I have always thought one of the great things about online shopping is that you can search for exactly what you want, and use databases to narrow the results down to specific features and prices

Even when going to a store, I go there intending to buy something specific. Browsing around may work for some people, but I have no interest in 99% of the movies/music/books/games they sell, so it just seems like a lot of wasted time sifting through crap.

It's pretty cool, but not at all useful for me. There are some great recommendation services (such as last.fm for music or movielens for movies) out there that are a lot more helpful and considerably less time-wasting.

Just my 2c

Now that's cool.
It obviously needs search capabilities but I suspect these functions aren't there simply because this is a demo of the new UI. Once it's properly integrated in to Amazon it will be awesome.

People keep taking things that are beta and lock them in as a rev 10.0. I just don't get it. The fundamental concept of this is absolutely what is needed in the browsing world.

Right now with web pages there is no "fluidity", there is no "good interaction". All we have right now is a bunch of fixed boxes with text and links. It takes too much much time to parse it. Our minds have the ability to tear through images much faster than text. The phrase "a picture is worth a 1000 words" has never been more true. Once integrated with searching this will be an insanely power full system.

I agree with you Trepidati0n, this is a much more efficient and involving way of browsing. This sort of browser integrated with some kind of "meta-data" engine engine would be very powerful.

My only complaint with this particular interface is the lack of integration with the mouse. I dont know about you but I was expecting to be able to pan by moving the mouse around as well as the scroll wheel to zoom in and out. That would make the navigational experience much more enjoyable.

I think this would make a kickass homepage (not amazons but with your own stuff) like you have all you commonly used links connected to the homepage. Just a thought but it is a very slick layout and makes me want to buy stuff so it works.
