Am I playing with fire?

I've been building my "dream computer", so to speak, over the past year or so and alongside the ram (mentioned in my other thread), the other outdated component is the power supply.

To the best of my knowledge, its an extremely generic 400watt PSU that came with a $12 case (thanks slickdeals :))

I'm running on it: AMD Athlon 3800+ CPU, nVidia Geforce 7600 Graphics Card, 100GB Maxtor SATA hdd, 200GB Seagate PATA hdd, kn8-sli motherboard, Hauppage WinTV-Go TV Tuner, 1GB Kingston Hyper-X Ram.

The power supply has yet to fail me, but I've got my doubts. Obviously, its a worthwhile investment to upgrade such a trivial piece to protect my other hardware, but I still wonder... how has it lasted this long?

(Also, the previous CPU running on it was an absurdly overclocked AMD Sempron)

Also, if you've got a recommendation for a replacement PSU, I'd love to hear. I've actually got another 7600 that I'm going to SLI, but I'm waiting on a fresh PSU before I try and pull that much power off a bargain bin box.

*Thats an Athlon X2 3800, and I've also got a PCI wireless card installed. I keep a number of gadgets attached via USB almost constantly, too. (iPod, Treo, Camera)

The monitor is a Dell 2405FPW.

Eek!! I always hate listening to people who trust their computer to a cheap power supply. I have seen many computers crash and burn due to crappy power supplies.

I will recommend the PSU I recommend to everyone, the Seasonic S12-600. However I don't know if it is in your price range. It is currently $159.99 at New Egg.

How much are you looking to spend??

Well, I've sunk more money then I'd like to admit into this computer, so I really don't have an issue with spending money to protect the components.

With that said, I'd prefer to get the best value for my money - I'll defiantly check out the power supply that you recommended.

You probably can go with one of the lower wattage models. A namebrand 400w PSU will be capable of putting out a lot more than your cheap 400w.

It's like rolling the dice.

I had an el cheepo one whose fan died, luckily I walked into the room and smelled the smell, and shut the machine down prior to real damage. I put in a better PSU at that point.

I've since replaced the dead fan and used the psu to replace my roommate's dead psu, with instructions for her to buy a new decent one ASAP, keeping fingers crossed in the meantime.

I'd think a decent 500W unit would serve you well, I get by with an Ultra X-connect that I got on sale for $35 at Fry's in my sig's rig. They don't receive a whole lot of acclaim, but it's working well for me.

yeah replace it quick, i just had a cheapo old PSU fry a mobo and cpu, fortunatly it was a older socket A 2100+ and epox 8k3a+ it could hit 2.4ghz though :(

I'd get the OCZ GameXStream 600w. Kick-ass PSU, especially for the money ($120 or less).

An S12-430 could power his box and then some.
