Alpha Protocol $4 at Gamersgate

If you still haven't played this one, think Splinter Cell gameplay/story with traditional Bioware Mass Effect/KOTOR style dialog/morality. Not a great game, but a solid game. I've beat it twice.

It's a great game imo. It has a lot of bugs though. If only it was moddable, it would have done so much better.

Come on, I'm a big fan of AP, but it is not a great game. System Shock 2 is a great game. IL-2 Sturmovik is a great game. STALKER is a great game. Alpha Protocol is merely a solid game. Easily worth 4 bucks, for sure, but don't expect Deus Ex. Quality-wise, if Mass Effect is KOTOR, Alpha Protocol is KOTOR II. Same company made Alpha Protocol and KOTOR II, btw, so it's an even more apt comparison than it might otherwise be. ;)

I concur with the volume of bugs. There are no real mods or fan patches to speak of, but there are a bunch of ini tweaks that can be used to improve the game somewhat. Still, expect to deal with a lot of irritating glitches before you see the end. It's a lot like Vampire - Bloodlines was at release, if you remember that. Another great game, that was.

Too bad Sega owns the IP. What they learned from this first game could have made a GOTY second game.

Doubtful. It was never very original. I mean, it literally ripped the gameplay from Splinter Cell and a half dozen other similar games, and the dialog stuff is straight up Bioware. The story was interesting enough to keep you playing but it was hardly top drawer material, in fact at times it was a downright joke with subplots that never went anywhere. The mistakes that Obsidian made could have easily been avoided... but they weren't. It isn't like this was Obsidian's first game, it was merely their first attempt to develop their own IP, and in that they did not succeed.

I should have clarified for you...

If they learned from what worked well and what didn't in the first, they could have made a very good second game.

Obsidian does actually have better writers than Bioware/most other AAA RPG devs.

I really loved this game. If you can get past some of the issues which I felt were mostly minor it really is a great game.

Mechanically I liked this game. But the plot was disappointing. Unfortunately you can't criticize the plot without spoiling it. Which is why the game never took off, but you don't hear why.

I have to disagree. A lot of the things were just plain great. I actually liked the mini games in it too, and THAT's rare. I've never played Deus EX though. I played a little of HR but if that's a great game then I cringe at those type of great games. It's by no means perfect, but it was great, no doubt.
