Almost Reaching 3870 speeds...

On my MSI 3850 256 MB, I currently have it OC'd with a Core clock of 785 and the memory at 1040. My idle temps are about 54, and under load it hits almost 70. I use the stock fan, and keep it at 70% for normal use but for games or 3d application, i crank it up to 100 and turn up the game sound to make the fan noise inaudible.

Seems like a really nice OC to me, but do you think it' safe to be running a such a cranked up speed? I've played crysis and ran 3d mark with it and no artifacting or crashes.

Should be fine unless it starts artifacting or causing trouble, with those temps i wouldnt sweat it. Keep pushing it and see if you can hit 3870 speeds.
 
I'm guessing that by saying that your almost reaching 3870 speeds you mean just the memory, right? Core clock I know that there is a 3870 that I have seen stock come with a clock of 665mhz and your at 785.

Reference core clock on the 3870 is 775MHZ the 3850 is 668MHZ you sure you didnt see a typo?

Well went to Newegg to look at what I thought the speeds were but turns out your right. I could of sworn that I saw a 3870 at 665mhz. Then again I'm on duty and on watch at 3am in the morning. I think I was just to tired.

Anything above my current core clock and the drivers crash, the memory on the other hand i haven't found a wall yet, but in rivatuner if i move the slider over 1040 it shows a little yellow exclamation point, and kinda scared me from going any higher, what's the exclamation point mean?
pushing to 1125 on the memory is 3870 speeds correct?

Edit, the highest i can go is 785/1070 any higher then that on either one causes artifacting or crashes the drivers, I guess i could go higher if i knew of a voltage mod, but why bother.
I ran 3dmark06 again and i got 10,788.
 
Grats,

I can only get 760 with my HD 3850 then the driver "stops working" and I get a crash. It isn't overheating. Most of these cards get well below what you are getting due to limited voltage.
 
Remember that the 3870 has a BIOS wall (860Mhz?), so 3850 could also has a BIOS wall around 760-780mHz.
I would wait for a tested 3850 BIOS mod (google it!) and only after that try pencil volt mods or resistor mods IF i was pretty sure that a 3850 can reach the 1Gz that voltmodded 3870 reached already:
to be honest i still see the 3870 as a much better overclocker than the 8800GT.The BIOS+voltmods results of the 3870 are amazing and soon enough ATI may release revised 3870s with higher voltages and new BIOS: it has been PROVED that over 1Gz the 3870 is stable and can be a true opponent to the 8800GT.

i dont think that a 3850 can be voltmodded at 3870 overcloking speeds since the 3850 has worst volt regs and capacitors.
 
I've been reading about voltmoding the 3850/3870. How hard is it to do?? Do you just take a pencil and go over two solderings and connect them that way? Do you have to measure the voltage with a meter because I don't have one.
 
the new atitool is suppose to support voltage adjustements for the 3870, possibly the 3850 too since they're basically the same core, just different voltage. I would wait until that is released.

If you dont know what you're doing with a pencil mod you can fry your card. I.E. it is resistance you NEED to measure!!! Dont just blindly do it.

Once you think you got the resistance where you want it you verify the voltage when running a 3D app. 2D voltage is different (lower). ***Must have a meter***

I dont recommend the pencil Vmod
 
I was sitting comfortably at 810/1125 on everything except source games and DiRT. crysis, fur benchmark, atitool and other games were stable. since i mainly play CS:S at the moment, i've lowered the speeds to 777/999 and it's fine.
