All the HL2 benchmarks suck, enough with it. ATI, nVivdia, whatever. There are too many discrepencies- screenshots showing different things, unknown AA and AF settings that its all nonsense. As far as I am concerned until HardOCP does another uber-benchmarking session with HL2 like was done for Doom 3, all the data is bunk.

Thank you and good night.

I second that emotion...from one site to the next benchmarks are varying by 15% with no apparent reason why...I'm hoping Kyle is beating down Valve's door...

It doesn't seem that hard...seriously I think I should start my own hardware site...:)

oh there is always a reason hehe, if ya know which site I'm talking about ;)

You are correct. There are too many problems with the benchmark. I can run it once and get a very high score, than run the exact same benchmark with the same settings and get +/- 10fps. With Doom 3 my FPS ALWAYS remain within 1-2% of each other when I run them.

Another thing- The new beta Nvidia drivers have AF and triliniar optimizations that give me a 20-25% increase when I crank up the rez, the AA and the AF :)

First off i would just like to say that so far i was right about Valve's new Source engine not being very stressful. :p

I said HL2 wouldn't be nearly as stressful as other games like DOOM 3 and Far Cry and so far from the Valve stress test benchmarks that fact is holding true.

Its not going to matter if you have an nVidia card or an ATI card for Half Life 2 so you might as well pick the one thats better overall.

Our Counter-Strike: Source benchmarks from Tuesday used real-world gameplay, and we saw that Counter-Strike: Source ran very well on both NVIDIA and ATI's hardware. After further research, we found out that Counter-Strike: Source does not use many of the effects or shaders the Source Engine offers, the effects and shaders we'll be seeing with Half-Life 2.

The Half-Life 2 stress test is really just a quick timedemo that runs through an E3 demo we saw in 2003. In the demo are many of the Source Engine's special effects, including bump-mapping, sub-divided surfaces and light blooming. I've also received a lot of email regarding NVIDIA's leaked 65.62 Forceware drivers, so I will be including benchmarks with those as well.

The HL2 demo is also not indicative of the real world performance we will see when HL2 releases.

]VR-Zone updated their Half-Life 2 Performance comparison using the Valve Stress Test. Results once again put the XT PE on top, in this case by about 25% at 16x12 4xAA 8xAF (82.1 vs. 62.3). The gap is closed a bit by using the 65.62 beta drivers, down to about a 17% advantage for the XT PE.

nVidia has increased their D3D performance alot in the latest 65.xx beta drivers and will continue to do so as time goes on.

As for the slightly deeper question of whether a 6800GT or X800 Pro is the better card for this game, the answer (based around these tests) is 'it doesn't matter' - Both cards handle the game excellently, and there is really nothing much to choose between the two as far as either performance or image quality goes.

Well, they aren't Half Life 2 benchmarks in the first place...

Yeh, personally I don't see how the VST is going to represent real life HL2 gameplay.

This exactly why i don't trust benchmarks from anywhere except Hardocp.

Right On. The only places I trust are HardOCP and Anandtech.

Yeah, especially since the [H] ditched the canned benchmarks like 3dmark. They're fun to watch, but like the css benchmark, they just aren't accurate :)

And your probly right that it doesn't come close to how the actual game will perform. The VST was simply a few rooms to run through with no AI or gameplay. I have a feeling parts where your fighting those striders with twenty other enemies all on the same screen will be 10x more taxing.

speaking of CS:S VST benchmarks, here are mine with 65.62 and the new 66.00 drivers:

CS:S Video Stress Test, all options maxed (65.62/66.00)
0xAA, Trilinear
800x600 135.34/137.29
1024x768 130.08/132.01
1600x1200 93.44/94.45

4xAA, 16xAF
800x600 128.48/130.91
1024x768 117.79/119.92
1600x1200 61.11/63.98

:p

you don't trust me?

I'm confused. Wasn't the sole purpose of the VST to give people an idea of how HL2 will play? Isn't that the whole purpose for its existence?

And I agree with you burning, from what I've seen the Source engine runs fast as hell on all the new cards...so even though the XTPE does lead by a very tangible margin, it doesn't really make a difference unless you have a monitor that supports resolutions higher than 16x12...

But no surprise there, the game is already a year old...lol

I don't suppose you have 61.77 numbers for reference? And has anyone examined the image quality of these new drivers yet?

It does makle a difference if you want to have that 10-25fps advantage in CSS at the highest res or, as you say, you have a monitor which can do 2015x etc (like mine.) I'm hoping nvidia catch up - for HL2 it doesn't matter as even the pro and gt will play it at full detail 16x12 4xaa etc, but i'm looking forwards to SM3.0 support and further improved nvidia D3D.

wow you get higher than me - my 6800Ultra oc must really be faulty. Is this with your nvidia qaulity set to "high Quality" ?

Or does the " :p " indicate that you're joking (why would you be)?

I really hope nvidia improve their scores tbh, they should do...

The benchmark is flawed, DONT SWEAT IT. I had some similiar really high runs, then tried the same settings later and got lower FPS. Now if your Doom 3 timedemo scores are way off you may have something to worry about.

i probably wont even believe valve's benches, after the stunt they pulled last year, the only places that im looking for performance comparison is hardocp and my capable computer.

website reviews are all over the map on this one no doubt..
everyone gonna run this ok looks like with late model hw.

seems to me its running better on the x800s though, but not worth having a cow over.

Yeah the 6800s can do 16x12 4xaa 8xaf at 60fps...I would call that more than enough power...the ATi cards in general do very well...the 9800XT catches up to the 6800NU for example...and the PE clears the Ultra by at least 10 fps at high resolutions...

I'm going by the xbit benches btw...

I'm really curious if Valve will be able to do anything for the 6800s with PS3.0...they have so many pixel shaders in HL2...It seems like they should be able to get something out of PS3...

IDEA! Suggestion to Valve:

There is only one thing you would have to do. ATI fanatics would (probably) regain their honor, NVidia !!!!!!s would (probably) be forever silenced. People would have an accurate grasp of how HL2 would run on their systems, and finally be able to rest in their certainty, be it for good or for ill. Afterward, there would be, inevitably, some selling and swapping of video cards, certain cards would fly off the shelves, others would continue to enjoy their day, and others would be overlooked by the enthusiast eye forever. The community would finally be able to gain closure, and move on to bigger and better debates, like how the frell Intel will get out of the Prescott debacle before it's too late.

RELEASE the GAME!!!

Sorry, I don't. If I don't have problems with drivers I rarely go back and CS:S beta was released (to HL2 voucher holders) after I upgraded to 65.62.

I was playing Doom3 and CS:S beta a little while ago and I didn't notice any IQ differences from 65.62.

or dont assure the world that the game is done and will be released on a date and wait until the day before to say that its delayed and now give very vague dates when it will be ready. i mean come on, id never did any of this bs and thats why i respect em.

Quality. I have the details in the nvidia forum along with Doom3, FC 1.2 SM3.0 and 3DMark03 benchmarks.

:p was for the title/rant, then me posting benchmarks.

They will get alot out of it. If ya noticed the HDR they were doing was only in very low poly areas :) and there is a good chance its not true HDR, cause in the outdoor screens of CS its not there.

Well right now the engine is still beta, I'm sure nV will close the gap with newer drivers. They have 2 months or so to work on it before the release :)

knowing the validity of this VST, who knows where this could go? and knowing the record of HL2, it could be a while.

Hahaha lol :p I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon. ;)

here's my biased conspiracy theory for today (I'm NOT serious)...

ATi is pressuring Valve because they look like garbage right now with Doom3 out...so Valve releases the VST and gives it to driverheaven first...:p

Well they announced they were going to patch it...but yeah, I'm for sure not holding my breath on that one...
