All Skyrim Races

something still just doesnt look right with the character modeling. What is it going to take for bethesda to finally master that?

Cant put my finger on it. But their in game characters in every title, animation, etc just never really look 'alive' i suppose.

Well it's gonna be hard to get Crysis or BF3 level graphics and animation with an open world TES game. Maybe next time. Are people really so picky though that this weighs on their mind? Reminds me of the 'first world problems' meme that was going around..

Its not so much the graphics as it is the animation. Since morrowind its really been the same. Im not an Elder Scrolls hater by any means, but everytime they release a new game, even fallout, seems like the characters are turn and spin and just not very well animated. Just my opinion i suppose. One of my pet peeves with the series.

I keep hoping!

From the game-play videos you can clearly see that the animation is way better then Oblivion, still remains to be seen what the retail version will look like but since it's only 2 1/2 months before it releases I'm pretty sure they won't be making any drastic changes, however the gameplay video's we have seen are probably from a build almost half a year old I'm pretty sure.

I'm not liking the new orc style, and need to see a few more examples of the elf races(I dislike the ones posted, but it could just be how those character faces are customized),but otherwise, the new styles are looking good.

What don't you like about the Orc? I like the new orcs way more than the old ones. I like orcs but never played as an Orc because I thought they looked crap. Same with argonians and kajits, I actually want to play as them for once.

I think the Orcs look pretty good too. I think all the races look good enough to play this time around.

The charcter models look great to me ... I don't understand the hate.

As others have pointed out, some of the texture looks bad

Take for example, Dark Elf

His weapon looks impressive, but compare that to the item he's wearing around his arms. Those circle things on it looks like its being drawn on it. They didn't even attempt to apply some bump mapping or anything to make it look like its a 3D object, give those circle a little depth or the edges a little bulge. It just looked like a flat piece of clothing

Or the female imperial guard clothing. It looks like she's wearing a shirt with stuffs being drawn on it.

Overall it surely is an improvement when compared to Oblivion. But its certainly just ok by today's standard. Hopefully the modding community can take better advantage of the game engine's capabilities

As apposed to the Neolithic ones from Oblivion? ...Well to each his own I suppose.

I just hope they fix the voices in this one. It was so annoying to talk to a beggar, and then all of a sudden they change their accent in mid-conversation to sound like royalty.

And it was the same 3-4 voice actors for everything.

I'm pretty sure from what I've read and heard all over that the voice acting was given WAY mroe priority vs Oblivion. Heck, the Fallout games were worlds better in that regard right off the bat.

That's good to hear. Makes me even more exciting that Todd is making it a point to mention that.

As an aside, what's with everyone showing off their games on the 360? Does Microsoft pay them to show off only in 360?

M$ might do that. Todd noted he was doing it just for the reason that they couldn't easily get it setup with a kb/mouse. With the 360 they just use a wireless controller (the stage was just a stage, essentially).

Now this could be BS because microsoft wants fanfare on their console.. or because the build they had working best was on 360.

Todd was talking during the gameplay while he was playing, and I was watching his fingers carefully to see that it matched up with what he was doing.. so he was actually playing -- though I'd seen a very very similar demo on the internet the day before... Everyone screaming for him to run into the water made it a bit different after he eventually caved in :p

I remember they noted about voice actors being in the range of 10-15x the number there were before. It looks like they really tried to address a lot of the issues people had in oblivion and morrowind, and bump up the graphics.

Big highlights I think that will make it better are the new quest system.. new dialogue interface, more voice actors... much better character models.. the skill system seems quite a bit better.. really like how they have left hand right hand and mixing of the two for attacks and magic... and sweet jesus.. the UI looks SO much better.

Well, yeah when it's Todd playing, then yeah, he stated he prefers 360 over PC (for himself personally).

14 voice actors to 70. Keep in mind 2 of those 14 also voiced only 1 character each as well in Oblivion.

My problem is that they both look too "human". Orc's don't look brutish enough, and the elves, well as I said it could just be they way they were customized, but *typically* in lore elves are depicted as long, but narrow faces, with up-ticked eyebrows, with very nordic-like features. Previous Elder-Scrolls games re-enforced this.

As-Is, The posted picture on the forum Orc look awesome, but as I look at other screenshots the Orc's just look like an angry green-ish human with sharp teeth and tusks growing from the bottom jaw.
Crap Orc's:

Awesome looking Orc:

While the elves just look like differently skin coloured humans with pointy ears. But that might be just how the limited set of elf characters we've seen are customized, because I do see, sublly, but none the less there, those other "elvish" qualities.

The new Khajiit and Argonian look AWESOME though.

^^ I see what you're saying about the Orc's. They do look like green skinned "humans" with a massive underbite. I'm not too familiar with ES lore so I can't say how "evolved" they should be, but maybe it is just the customization. The middle-aged hairstyle the first 2 have look like something my dad would rock.

so does this one have a set number of faces, rather than a fully customizable ones?

If you read the article -

Like Bubba from Forrest Gump, we could go on for days talking about the different customization options you’ll have with Skyrim. But instead, we decided to share the preset options you’ll have when you start your adventure. Above is a sampling of choices you can make for the men and women of Skyrim… the Nord

Something that bothers me in every game where they have an avatar body/face modifier is that they always seem to omit a real option for long hair. I understand there are technical character modeling reasons for this, but still...it just seems wrong. Like in Oblivion where you could have 'long hair' that went to the bottom of your neck or so: if it doesn't touch the shoulders, it doesn't count!

It is a huge technical limitation, hair might seem simple, but it is actually very hard to do. You'll notice how most video game hair isn't actual "real hair" but a static model.

I assume the short hair length limitation is because it looks less "fake" if your hair is static when it is short. Or if you want to give it some animation, it is less taxing when it is short. There is also clipping issues. You'll notice 3rd party mods that add this to Oblivion or Fallout 3 exhibit these issue.

I just hope they have a way to modify your appearance post-creatoin.

Nothing more annoying then making ai guy, getting out in the world, then finding something you wanna change that bugs you.

I can definitely understand how it would be very difficult or impossible to get it to come out right in a game engine. And it's probably better that they leave it out rather than put something nonfunctional or half-assed in. It's just as someone who's spent 5 years growing hair down to the small of their back, in an ideal world I would be able to recreate that image for in game representations of myself.

Edit - just followed the Bethesda blog link, looks like long hair is in! Hell of yes!

They REALLY need to use physics on hair/cloth though, I mean it is entirely possible to do, even in an open world game.

Can even option it so people can turn it off, limit it's range, player only, etc.

I want long hair on my nord, going for a Conan'ish look, however I know it's gonna end up being that usual "block on your head" kind that never moves, it' sdistracting and looks bad, mainly because so many games these days use phyiscs on it. From The Wticher 2 to Assassins creed, etc.

Nice. Some of those are perfect for some downtrodden, oppressed societies.

Man, this brings me back to the ashlanders. (Also thought I was looking a dwemmer at first). I definitely give a thumbs up for the direction things are looking.
