Need some help with a problem I've been working on.

OK, first off specs:

P4 3.0E
IC7-Max3 (i875p)
1 GB Corsair TwinX 3200C2Pro
480w Antec TruBlue
Audigy 1

Now to the issue. When using ATI Mulitmedia Center, it works just fine for about a minute. Then I lose audio, and then the picture freezes. Only way to shut it off is to hit the reset switch. The card otherwise is perfect. It games well for it's age, and works like it should. Every driver is up to date, and I have fully patched XPSP2VLE (nice being in college ;)) All stock settings on the mainboard, and no modified cooling of any kind. If you ordered everything, took it out of the box and plugged it in, you'd have the same thing I do.

I even got the issue on a 100% clean install. The only files loaded were mainboard drivers, video drivers, audio drivers, and then MMC. Same issue with every version of MMC as well. Chris TV works without issue, it's just MMC. Same card in a different box is fine, another identical card in this box gets the same issue. I'm stumped.

I even tried it with just the onboard audio to be sure it wasn't the audigy.

Well I've been doing some thinking that perhaps for some reason my board isn't supplying sufficient power. I do of course have it plugged into the ps, but right now I'm just stuck. What do you think would happen if I upped the voltage a bit?

Tried a 480w Neopower, same issue. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped as hell.

Well, since I appear to have stumped the board, I'll post my solution.

Apparently MMC has some issues with Hyperthreading on some board/chip combinations. My my case all I have to do is go to task manager and change the affinity settings back to just 1 of the CPU's for the ATIMMC process. Then it runs stable. It took 5 calls to ATI over 3 months to get here, but I'm glad it works now. The guy I talked too said they're working on addressing the issue in the next MMC release.

Hey nice job finding this solution! I have had this problem for quite some time also. (I knew HT caused these issues, but sorry I just now saw this post  )

I hadn't thought about manually setting the affinity to 1 CPU. I wonder if there is a way to always run a prog set to 1 CPU affinity? I don't think the wife would be able to handle the whole affinity/multi virtual CPU concept:p

Possible solution?

If your PC does have hyperthreading enabled, there is a universal patch programme that you can run to permanently bind a particular application to a single processor. We have archived it for you here: imagecfg.zip. Just download that file and unzip it. To fix up a particular game, install the game first. Then open a Command Prompt, and change to the folder where you unzipped imagecfg.exe. Figure out where your game's main executable file is (right-clicking on the game's icon and examining the Properties is a pretty safe bet). Using Grim Fandango as an example, you would enter something like this at the Command Prompt:

imagecfg -a 0x1 c:\GrimFan\Grim.exeAnd you should see the following output:

c:\GrimFan\Grim.exe contains no configuration informationc:\GrimFan\Grim.exe contains a Subsystem Version of 4.0c:\GrimFan\Grim.exe updated with the following configuration information: Process Affinity Mask: 00000001
