AIM alternatives?

Is there a good alternative to AIM? Preferably one that is free.

I don't so much like the layout of AIM. I prefer something like the one for Mac named Adium. I want to know if there is a similar program for Windows.

Adium X is based on the same libraries as Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ so they should be functionally similar. It won't look as nice, because the Windows GTK port isn't the best... I still use it, though. :)

Well, I downlaoded Trillian and love it so far. The Trillian basic has some limiting features, but it is better than AIM.

I have no problem with AIM really, besides the annoying ads that will start playing a movie out of nowhere. I just use Deadaim. I used Trillian for about a year, then gave it up once I only used Xfire/AIM. Now, I want to give AIM up for Google Talk, but for some reason I just cant convince a girl to get off AIM.

trillian is good. I used it for awhile, then upgraded to pro. Then I got tired of it using so many CPU cycles so I switched to GAIM (or Gay-AIM as some call it). There's like two features that I miss, but it is a very simple and clean program. I didn't need all that extra stuff like video chat.

gaim is great until you get a few tabbed conversations going, and then realize that the tabs dont scale down in size to fit in your chat window and you have to scroll right and left to read them...

that made me go back to trillian :p

Tabs in Trillian don't suck. Not to mention Trillian is about the closest program to OSXs Adium. Like someone else said Adium X will always look better than Trillian or any other like program.

It is an opinion. I do not like using tabs in trillian or GAIM. So, I think they suck :)

You're very right. But it makes me wonder why don't you like Tabs? Helps keep the desktop less cluttered. Just like FireFox or IE7.

oh I do like tabs :)

but I just don't think it is as useful with IM. I like to be able to see different conversations at the same time, so if I'm talking to someone then someone else messages me I can see what they are saying while I'm finishing my response to the first person. And my task bar is three rows high, so it doesn't usually get too cluttered (and it auto hides)

As is my experience with tabbed messages for AIM types, tabbed windows prevents you from using alt-tab. Seeing as how I am an alt-tabbing whore, that doesnt sit so well. Tabs in firefox, on the other hand, can be accessed with mouse gestures, which are Incredible :)

See, now, I hate firefox tabs. Its weird, I hate AIM not tabbed and I hate firefox with tabs.

I use gaim at work and AIM Ad Hack at home (just for direct IM, which no other clients support)

I use Trillian when I need AIM. TerraIM is a great little app that doesn't require installation. great for chatwhores on the go.(With thumbdrives)
I use xfire mainly now. Haven't seen any rap album ads or new message recieved tones yet either!

I found trillian out about 2 years ago. Its great. I install the real Yahoo Messenger but I use trillian for AIM and MSN. It does have a few features missing from yahoo though.

ctrl + tab or ctrl + shift + tab switches between tabs in firefox. Not sure about IM.

You like the Flash people with Yahoo Messenger that I know no multi-chat client has been able to add in. I think as long as you can chat, voice and maybe video you should be great but the extras are fun.

I believe those worked for AIM. For firefox, i rpefer the mouse gestures cause i find i often browse just using the mouse. As bad as that sounds, what i mean is i lean back and dont necessarily keep my hand on the keyboard! I still feel that alt tabbing is superior and easier to find the exact window you want. Vista's alt tabbing looks very interesting...

Yeah I understand. I rarely use alt(ctrl) + tab for firefox or even windows. My reason is that I have way too many windows/tabs open at once for it to be useful. It's a lot faster for me to just click on the tab or click on the window on the taskbar. I organize my taskbar with a program called Taskbar Shuffle so I usually know where each specific window is. And with firefox I can just move tabs around if needed.
Usually the only time I use alt + tab is when I switch from one window to another, then decide to go back to the first window.

i been using trillian for a couple of years now, and i basically swear by it... i install it right away on every fresh install.
