My friend has a P4 3.2GHz / 2GB DDR / x1600. He wants to be able to play some more recent games, specifically ARMA 2. Were wondering if the AGP HIS 4670 will get him by for some more time, or if that CPU would be too much of a bottleneck?

Also, that 4670 runs the same as the PCI-X version, correct? For researching benchmarks.
 
not with a P4 it won't. your not going to be able to really compare benches with that.
 
ARMA 2 requires a dual core CPU.

Might be worth picking up the cheapest HD4650 you can find, but don't expect great performance as many games will be CPU limited. And other games wont run at all because quite a few require at least dual core CPUs now.
 
Yeah the P4 is going to suck in games pretty much no matter what, and likely you won't see much of an improvement over the x1600. That being said, if he is dead set on getting an AGP card, try to find a 3850 AGP, it's actually faster than the 4670.

For future reference, PCI-X is definitely NOT the abbreviation for PCI-Express. PCI-X is something totally different, an extension of the legacy PCI bus mainly found on servers.
 
That card costs $125 on newegg. I spent that much upgrading an AGP system three years ago and ended up regretting it. Tell your friend to stop throwing good money into a bad system - this is like replacing the engine in a Yugo. Go to the General Hardware forum and see what a very basic PCI-E DDR3 system can be built for now.
 
Pretty much, you can buy a new agp video card but the performance will still stink. There's no way he's playing ARMA 2 on a P4 with a 4670 or even a 3850.

Get a cheap AMD mother board and ram and you're set to go. AGP is a dead bus. PCIE is really the only way to go to get modern games working on a modern graphics card.

The cheapest quad-core he can get would probably come from AMD. And with a combo he can also get 4GB of DDR3 ram for $154 with free shipping.

890gx mobo. The cheapest one is made by Jetway. Not sure of the quality of that company but the price looks good. $79 plus $8 shipping.

So that's a complete new system shipped for $242. And now he can pick ANY PCIE video card he wants to use instead of being limited by obsolete agp.

Thanks for all the advice. I also realize now that a PCI-E 4670 would be much cheaper.

highly recommend that he just upgrade his system. its easy to get a good AMD system right now. 300 dollars would get him there I think.
 
Lol that was funny about the agp mobo. The agp card was just to see if he could play new games and spend the least amount of money, but an agp mobo sounds super-counter-productive lol.

Go for a quad-core CPU if you can. That made a huge world of difference in Arma 2 with my brother's PC when he upgraded to AMD Athlon II X4 630 CPU. It regularly pegs 80% to 90% across all four cores during Arma 2 for him.
 
Upgrading is definitely the best path.

The AGP HD3850, HD4650, and HD4670 will all play modern games well enough (medium settings). But the problem is usually the CPU on these old systems. New games pretty much require at least a dual core cpu. The last main AGP systems used Athlon x2 and the crappy Intel dual core cpus. Both will run new games, but will severely limit the frame rates. Best to move on.

this AMD is seriously lagging behind Intel right now so there are some awesome deals on quads and tri core cpus. you can put together a nice system for less then the cost of a high end graphics card

X4's are cheap any more. You're friend's P4 is soooo obsolete.

He'd be way better off to save up and get a new rig. Once a machine is that old, it can't really be upgraded any further.

beats me, I can understand why someone would want to buy a new mobo with ISA card support; but AFAIK because it was designed for GPU use only there aren't any 5-7+ figure (industrial and scientific) devices attached to AGP ports.
