AGEIA has just announced that its PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit will be available tomorrow and comes with two UT3 Mod levels: Tornado and Lighthouse. For now, you can follow the link and watch the embedded video of the Tornado level in action.

AGEIA™ Technologies, Inc., the pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics for games, today announced a PhysX Mod-Kit for Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3) that will allow developers and modders to create completely new experiences in the game and customize existing levels to enhance game-play and interactivity. As the engine that drives underlying physics interaction in UT3, PhysX enables dynamic game-play on all systems with additional benefits for PhysX Processor owners. The AGEIA PhysX UT3 Mod-Kit will offer modders everything they need to easily add PhysX-powered content into the UT3 universe. Complementing Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) tools that are already deeply integrated with PhysX technology will be additional tools, guides, tutorials and documentation and assets and examples.

Looks pretty cool. But I find myself wondering, how would a quad core CPU handle that? Doesn't look too extreme to me for a quad.

On my old AMD X2 system with a single 8800GTS, the hardware physics box on the UT3 demo was greyed out. On my Q6600 and SLI 8800GTS's, I could click it. So I don't know if the CPU or the extra video card enabled.

But is it worth it to have a PhysX when you can already click the box? Benchmarks?

I just want the maps, really. :)

I think the quad core must enable it because I *believe* I was able to click the box as well on my main rig. I didn't think anything of it though, since I assumed it would simply try to use the card that isn't there. I wonder if it does enable the enhanced levels, though....
hrm

Looks like PhysX is the only game in town now that AMD has abandoned GPU physics and Intel has purchased Havok. That could change when Intel has Larrabee out some time in the future.

Might as well make a :CueCat Mod-kit. Hehe, I think more people had :CueCats than Physics cards.
Sorry Ageia, you missed the boat, if the card could have helped Folding@home or SETI@home with all that power, you would have sold millions! Or ask someone to get off thier ass and develope Aliens Vs Predator 3!

Why is all of the debris in the tornado flying through the walls? Shouldn't it be slamming into the walls and causing more damage? .:psedo-physics:.

For the last year or so all we have been hearing about Ageia enabled physics for UT3. Now that I have the game in my hand their is literally no mention of Ageia or PhysX on the UT3 box or manual (just a generic "enable hardware physics" option) and now we have to download additional content just to see what PhysX can really do. Something must have happened between Ageia and Epic.

There was an interview a while back with Epic, I think with Tim, where they he said doing physics on a seperate card was dumb. Basically that the separation of the CPU and the GPU already present a bottle neck and adding one more layer of separation for physics processing was taking things in the wrong direction, in his opinion.

I'm too lazy to find the link, but [H] linked to it a month or 2 ago. I though it was odd because UT3 seemed to be the only 'A list' title that promised support for the card.

Competition is good, but I look forward to Intel with 16 cores (4 for game play, 8 for graphics, and 4 for physics). Intel killed the math co-processor market overnight with the original Pentium and they could do the same for both graphics and physics co-processors in use today.

when I had a e6600 and 8800gtx I could click hardware physics

when i went SLI with 8800gt's and same cpu it was already selected when i installed the game

There are other A list titles, but their implementation is severely lacking. Like GRAW for example. GRAW2 is cool with Ageia Island, but one level won't get me to buy a physx.
I think the interview you're thinking about might actually be Gabe Newell from Valve, not Tim Sweeney from Epic.

Edge: You’ve more or less already placed your cards on the table about this, but what do you make of discrete physics cards, like Ageia’s PhysX?

GN: I think that’s a horrible idea. At the same time that the distinction between the GPU and CPU is going away the PPU guys want to come in and define a new set of abstractions, where we have memory and data that’s really far away from the CPU and CPU... How do I tell when something breaks, or gets pushed by a monster? All these decisions I have on my CPU have to sit around until they are resolved on the PPU and GPU, and you end up with a physics decelerator. This is the reason you want a homogenous architecture.

I just noticed that I have an Ageia item under my start menu, installed my UT3 I'm guessing. If I run the demos in there in full screen under "software mode"... I get 60 FPS no matter what I do.

How is that supposed to sell a card to me? ;)
