I have had my Dell 6000D for a while now and it is starting to show it's age. I was wondering if my laptop's MOBO would be able to support a dual core processor that is setup for the socket M? the point that i am getting at is whether or not it would be worth my time/money to make such an upgrade-as well as getting a better HD- for this machine.
by the way, here is a link to the processor that I was looking at: link

then the new HD I was planning on pairing with it: link

No socket M unfortunately... Pentium Ms only.

I'd reformat before I buy anything. Since replacing the HD will most likely involve reformatting anyways. Then if it still seems slow then I'd think about buying an 7200 HD or something.

No can do on a dual core CPU. Core 2 Duos and Core Duo have a different pin arrangement than Pentium M Cpus. The best you can do upgrade to a faster Pentium M. However there's also the issue of whether or not your laptop can support a 533Mhz FSB Pentium M. You do have the i915 chipset which can support the 533Mhz FSB Pentium M so it may possible.

Now that I think about it, you may be able to pin-mod your Pentium M:
http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/detail.php?id=35&PHPSESSID=ac4bf72ed413ecee11278e7973ec6cbd

So if the Pin-mod works, you'd have overclocked your 1.5Ghz Pentium M to a 2.0Ghz Pentium M!

If the pin mod doesn't work, and you want a faster CPU, just go on ebay and look for the following Pentium Ms as they're the only ones that may provide you with a noticeable performance increase:
Pentium M 755 (2.0 GHz) 400Mhz FSB
Pentium M 765 (2.1 GHz) 400Mhz FSB
Pentium M 760 (2.0 GHz) 533Mhz FSB
Pentium M 770 (2.13 GHz) 533Mhz FSB
Pentium M 780 (2.23 Ghz) 533Mhz FSB

Get the 400Mhz FSB Pentium Ms if you don't to take a chance with a 533Mhz Pentium M that may or may not work with your laptop.

Oh and if you want a bigger drive and a 5 year warranty, I'd recommend getting this:

I think it's worth the time and money to ugprade your laptop. If all you're doing is web browsing, word docs, and other general usage activities, then it's worth the upgrade. What's making you feel that you may need to upgrade this laptop or even get a new laptop altogether?
