1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, (WoW mainly, but hoping to run future games at decent settings)
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Budget is about $750, tax and shipping included
3) Where do you live?
Los Angeles, CA
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
CPU, RAM, Case, Power Supply, Vid Card, Hard Drive, Heat Sink Fan, DVD Burner,
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
ASUS P8P67-M Pro Rev 3.0
Mouse
Keyboard

6) Will you be overclocking?
Mild Overclocking, yes.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Already have a 23" Dell at 1920x1080
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Now
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
Motherboard is already accounted for. ASUS P8P67-M Pro Rev 3.0
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Already have Win7 64bit

So I'm getting the ASUS P8P67-M Pro as a gift and would like to build a new computer around that. Despite the mATX mobo, I'm thinking I don't necessarily need a mATX case. Here are the parts and prices I'm looking at (after tax and shipping):

i5-2500k from Microcenter ~$195 (I'll drive to pick this up myself)
Cooler Master 212+ from Amazon ~$27
Lite On DVD Burner ~$20

I could use some recommendations on PSU, Vid Card, Case, RAM and HDD. I would love to be able to throw a Crucial 64gb SSD in there if the budget allows for it, but it's not important.

Thanks

$40 - Patriot PSD34G13332 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM
$210 - XFX HD-687A-ZNFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB PCI-E Video Card
$62 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$25 - Lite-On iHAS424-98 DVD Burner
$80 - Antec Truepower New TP-650 650W PSU
$28 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus HSF for LGA 1366 and LGA 1156

Total: $445 shipped

I went with Amazon.com since they do not charge tax to CA residents.Add the CPU and it comes out to around $640. Speaking of the CPU, just how far and how long will you have to drive to that Microcenter?

Anyway, That leaves you about $110 for the case. I recommend these cases:
$60 - Cooler Master HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 ATX Case
$80 - Lian Li Lancool PC-K58 ATX Case
$90 - NZXT Tempest Evo TEVO-001BK ATX Case
$90 - Lian Li Lancool PC-K56 ATX Case
$90 - Cooler Master CM690 II Advance ATX Case
$90 - Cooler Master HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN1-GP ATX Case
$90 - Lian Li Lancool PC-K7B ATX Case
$106 - Lian Li PC-7B Plus II ATX Case
$110 - NZXT Whisper WHI - 001BK ATX Full Tower Case
$120 - Velocity Micro GX2-W Silver Classic Aluminum Case with Side Window

Take advantage of this PSU + HDD combo. Yes. you'll pay tax but the combo discount helps offset it. Plus, theres a $10 MIR

It only saves about $2 over buying the PSU and HDD from Amazon.com. $12 if you count the MIR. Not really worth it IMO since that $2 gets you twice the space and a slightly higher quality PSU.

It's about a 35 minute drive. Not too bad really.

Thanks for the case recommendations. I'll take a look into those.

Double the space for $2/$12 seems like a pretty good deal to me.

35 minute drive, hmmm... not sure what vehicle your driving but, you save $49.00 w/o tax included yet vs buying it on Amazon.com What's the tax % your paying up there? Hmm.. looks like you' pay $27 on tax added to $279.99 plus the drive to Micro-center. It really isn't worth it actually. You only save like $20. Maybe less considering you spending money on gas to travel there.

Tax here is 9.75%. I would be saving about $30 after tax. I'll have to think about if it's worth it or not or if I should just buy it from Amazon.

I do have another question though. A friend of mine had a spare case lying around and I was wondering if I would be able to use it and not have to buy a case. It's an older case. An Antec 3700BQE.

No. That case is not good enough for the parts recommended above.

For the case I would stick to the lower end cases. Also its kind of ugly, but the NZXT Vulcan would fit the bill as well & is within budget (very well designed for the most part) But between that or the Haf 912.. Then with the savings spend a few mroe bucks & get a 6950. & if you have any thoughts of going to a higher res monitor, or going eyefinity, the 6950 2gb would do the trick.

The 6970 would work well, but if you have it to spend there is no reason not to give yourself the little better card for the small difference (45 bucks for the 1gb card)

I agree with this statement: Although that case can accommodate an extra front 120mm fan, the case was not designed for optimal airflow to begin with. Sideways-mounted hard drives coupled with a hard drive mounting bracket that restricts airflow makes its use housing a modern system frustrating at best.

Good idea man.Heh, I dont think I would want to put new components in an old 8 year old case like that Antec.

That looks like an excellent build right there, I have a question, I know that the OP wants to run WoW with that rig, how would the same rig perform in a game like Rift? I'm exploring the idea of building a new rig, and I have a similiar (maybe a little more higher budget, but I like this build a lot).

I think my question boils down mainly to the graphics card, is it good enough?

Apparently Rift is pretty demanding GPU wise from what I've read so far. However I haven't seen any reviews of Rift showcasing performance with different cards so I really can't say whether or not it it'll be enough for Rift. Not to mention that you didn't mention resolution.

That's true, I did leave off a monitor. I prefer gaming at 1920x1200, i like 16:10 resolutions, they are awesome for me.

I like that build, it looks like it'd serve the average gamer's needs more than adequately.

Someone posted this on another Rift build thread

I have a 2.9Ghz Quad, 8GB of ram,1GB HD5770, and a 300gb Raptor, and I barely get 30fps at 1080p with Rift on Ultra.

It'll dip to 18fps or so in heavy moments. Was a bit surprised about this.

But, a Core I5 2500K + Radeon HD 6870 1GB should do pretty damn nicely for Rift. They said that enabling shadows is what drops their framerates down. Heck, its like enabling AA in Crysis. That game takes a big impact enabling AA.
