Well as of lately I've been reading up on two things very heavily. One thing is the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and the other is lapping cpu and Heatsinks.

The reason I made this thread is for some help. I wanted to know if anyone could give some tips on lapping (or even a link to a very good guide for lapping). I have heard that the Ultra-120 Extremes have uneven surfaces in the majority of the units (and I have read their reason as for why that is but I think that's lame). So I am considering lapping both my CPU and Ultra-120 Extreme (when I get it of course). Any help on this would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1) its incredibly easy. But take your time.
2) use only wet+dry type sandpaper and wet it, I do it under a dripping faucet.
3) use a pane of glass (less than a buck at Lowe's etc. or swipe the glass from a picture frame. )
4) moderate pressure, let the sandpaper do the work and having a pane of "regular" glass break in your bare hands can be "interesting".
5) recent technical papers by IBM on heatsink roughness have made me lean against trying to get a "mirror" finish. Flat is much much more important than some mirror shine. IMO 800 grit is good enough for the final sanding.

I had no trouble with my CPU, its scary but no worries, just handled it carefully while lapping and then I just cleaned it with alcohol, dried it with a hair blower on low, wiped it again with an alcohol prep pad (like for giving shots) let it dry again (less than a min) and handling it by the edges popped it back in.
