I have $400 to burn and would like to upgrade my computer.

My Setup:
AMD64 3000+ 754 Socket
1GIG of Corsair value RAM 2x512
Geforce 6800NU eVGA

I was considering upgrading my cpu or video card.

* AMD Athlon 64 3700+
* Geforce 6800GT

Which one would be the better choice?

Thanks,

3700+ imo, since later you can upgrade the video card and get a next generation one instead. A 6800gt won't be a huge step up, especially if you've unlocked your nu.

I dunno though. I don't think you need an upgrade just yet, and could instead save your money. Maybe get a new psu if you have a generic one or aftermarket coolers(if you don't have them already).

[Edit:] Btw, did you buy the 6800nu recently? Then you could use eVga's step-up program, in which case a 6800gt would probably be a much cheaper way to get extra performance.

[Edit2:] If you had a pci-e card atm, i'd say you could go socket 939. Dunno if you want to, and you probably shouldn't, but if you get a good price for your parts, 400$ would probably get you a dfi mobo and a 3500+ and the additional money could get you a pci-e graphics card.

I'd get the 3700+ and then get a good CPU cooler (XP-90) and OC that bad boy. You could probably ebay your 3000+ for $90-100 and have some more money for more upgrades :).
