advice migrating ZFS array to new hardware

Well, after finally losing sleep at night over not having ECC ram in my current NAS box I bit the bullet and ordered some new hardware

TYAN (S5533) Mini-ITX 1150 Server board
16GB ECC PC3-12800 Memory
Xeon E3-1220 v3
Norco ITX-S4 case

This is double the ram and slightly faster CPU than my old setup "i5-3470". So my question is, how do I safely migrate the RaidZ2 config from the old to new hardware inside of NAS4Free?

Probably zpool export on the old and zpool import on the new.

well shoot, it is a 16GB Hynix Reg ECC kit, but I was looking at the memory compatibility list on Tyan's site and they have some other 8GB Reg ECC modules listed for this board even though they say unbuffered on the spec sheet.. do you know something I don't?

As with previous versions, the Haswell Intel Xeon E3-1200 V3 series still utilizes unbuffered memory. It can accept either ECC or non-ECC memory. Larger capacity DIMM types such as Registered DIMMs or LRDIMMs will not work with the Haswell based Intel Xeon E3-1200 V3 series processors. As with previous generations, the Intel Xeon E3-1200 V3 series is a dual channel memory configuration and can therefore address up to four DDR3 DIMM slots. Memory speeds are the same as with the Ivy Bridge generations at a maximum of 1600MHz DDR3 memory. Each DIMM can be up to 8GB in size yielding a 4x 8GB = 32GB maximum memory amount for the Intel Xeon E3-1200 V3 series.

so do the 4th gen i3s support the Reg then? They don't specify in the memory compatibility list. http://www.tyan.com/support_download_memory.aspx?model=S.S5533

No consumer chipset (which includes all socket 115x stuff) supports registered memory. Registers don't offer any benefit, anyway, except that it helps put more sticks per channel. It's ridiculous, though, because it would be extremely easy to support both types of RAM in both consumer and server configs. The only reason to choose registered memory would be if you want >2 (if not even >4) sticks per channel, and it doesn't even make sense in servers if you're not using that many sticks. My guess is they keep them incompatible just so they can charge way more for the server stuff.

I just called Tyan, its an error on the website.. go figure. So will it most likely not even post with the reg memory or should I go ahead and order the unbuffered stuff?

It won't work at all. You absolutely must use unbuffered. Don't even try it.

BTW, unbuffered ECC RAM is the least common type of RAM. But it does exist.
 
ok, well just bought a Crucial 16GB kit from Newegg and found a 10% off coupon.. $153 isn't horrible but not the cheap $115 I paid for the other stuff. Back to eBay it goes. Also just purchased a 250w Seasonic PSU.

Update.. Just got the new NAS box built and drives moved over. It was a snap. So far between the integrated Intel NIC and the 16GB of RAM I've picked up a significant network throughput increase. Pretty happy with this upgrade.. server grade hardware now.
 
That is one of ZFS great features. :) One guy tested different OSes, from different Linux distros, FreeBSD to Solaris and Mac OS X. Eventually he settled with BSD I think. You are upgrade safe with ZFS, try to do this with another filesystem.
