I've sort of redone my build list, in an attempt to make my computer silent (my #1 priority) yet very usable. I will be running Ubuntu, so I am looking out for any known compatibility issues. I am on a very tight budget and cannot spend a cent more. The total cost is $820 (without shipping and tax), are there any parts available for less than would better suit this system?

1. I am looking to make this build silent, what do you think the loudest component would be?

Any reason why you need a dedicated video card? That motherboard does come with onboard video. Also, any reason why you chose that motherboard with an Nvidia chipset?

It would help if you told us what you were using this PC for.

Web, Listening to Music, Moderate Gaming....

I'm a little out of the wheel in regards to chipsets, is there some sort of pitfall to the nvidia chipset?

Nvidia chipsets for Intel CPUs aren't as stable or reliable as their Intel counterparts. So I recommend going with a different motherboard based on an Intel chipset like this:
Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L Intel G31 mATX Motherboard - $67

With that said, I haven't heard of anything bad with the Nvidia 630i chipset. But considering the track record of the 680i, 650i, and 780i chipsets, I'm a bit weary of recommending an Nvidia chipset.

Anyway your system looks good with the exception of the motherboard. Though if you're willing to do a little overclocking or don't mind a slight performance hit, I recommend dropping down to the the E2180 for $70. It should still suit your needs.

That Gigabyte motherboard was my initial choice, but I dropped it because I wasn't sure if there would be enough clearance between the large heatsink on my video card, and the mobo chipset heatsink.

Can anybody tell by looking at the pictures?

There's enough clearance. The HS on the video card is on the bottom and center of the card. So it won't interfere with either of the two chipset HS on the Gigabyte mobo.

Im thinking of the heatsink on the back of the card (which you cant really see in the newegg pictures), but it has some depth to it.

There is the Asus 8600gt with the heatsink in the front of the card, same price but no rebate. There's the Asus 8600gts $101 with $20 rebate. Both fanless. There are also Gigabyte fanless models but I wouldn't recommend them as there are user post regarding coil whine noise.

Well, I would prefer to keep the MSI 8600GT.

But by some accounts the heatsink is 3 inches deep. Does it sound like it would fit on that gigabyte mobo?

Ultimate quiet system is placing a noisy computer away from you work station, or go with a WC system.
