Wow is a lot of fun. I have a lvl 70 Priest I've been using before the Expansion and I started lvling a lock that is 40 right now. If you want to start a healing class I would suggest NOT playing as a priest. If you really want to be a healing class my best suggestion would be Paladin. You don't have to start lvling him holy spec but it could help you understand how to play your class better as you lvl.
My priest, to lvl her I started her off as Shadow. Then when I got to 60 and was able to raid, I messed around with her stats a little to make her Heal/Disc. She was well balanced for PVP and PVE. When the Expansion came out, I kept the same specs as I lvled to 70. When I started raiding with my guild again, she became pretty useless. Paladins tend to be better healers and where mainly used as tank healers. Priest where there to heal the groups and dispel spells but pallys could do that already. Priests just didn't get really buffed for the Expansion in terms of healing. They buffed them more for Shadow instead. With Shadow, you can help do dps, with Vampric Embrace enhanced you can cast it on a enemy and any shadow dmg YOU do, everyone in your group gets health AND mana, and if you have a warlock in your group, you can help him or her do MORE dmg. All and all, they made the shadow priest more like a battery which is really cool BTW.
I still have my priest and I kept trying to get better gear but it was just taking too long. My guild at the time was still doing Kara and Gruul, and gear rarely dropped for me. Farming to get better gear sucked because I couldn't do any where near as much dmg as other classes and since I'm playing on a PVP server, I'm very squishy and a target favored by Horde. I couldn't join any other guilds because I wasn't getting any gear fast enough and I couldn't do Arena because they wanted me to have better gear. I would do BG to get better gear but in order to actually get points you have to either be in a game with a group or if you pug on your own your team has to win. You could find the person who is the best on your team and heal them the whole time and rack up points that way but usually in a pug, you don't.
My friend on my server plays as a Warlock and he is in the #1 guild on our server. They downed Illidan months ago. I asked him about his guild and what they used his priests for. He said they mainly just have the priest that are disc spec give everyone fort and divine spirit and sit it out. The Shadow Priest go with them into the raids and use Pallys as healers because the are great batteries and help do Shadow dmg. Every once and a while they will have a healing priest go with them.
I'm having a lot of fun playing my warlock class because she can do so much dmg and everything is easier to do. I still get gangked from time to time but if I have my Soul Stone up, I can resurrect immediatly and kill them. I've actually had way more fun with my Affliction Warlock then my Priest.
If you want to play the Priest class, by all means, go ahead and do so, just expect to stay Shadow speced to get the best gear and farm faster. Who knows, maybe you will have better luck then me then I did with my priest. With the latest patch they made lvling much much faster and easier. You get way more experience now when you finish a quest. I've known people to lvl 4 times in a day in the 40's. They've improved a lot of things with the new patch recently and I love it even more.
Oh and I almost forgot, I'm a full time student, and a full time employee. I'm also graduating next semester with my associates. Just get all your work done before you play.
