advice for playing WOW

Wow is a lot of fun. I have a lvl 70 Priest I've been using before the Expansion and I started lvling a lock that is 40 right now. If you want to start a healing class I would suggest NOT playing as a priest. If you really want to be a healing class my best suggestion would be Paladin. You don't have to start lvling him holy spec but it could help you understand how to play your class better as you lvl.

My priest, to lvl her I started her off as Shadow. Then when I got to 60 and was able to raid, I messed around with her stats a little to make her Heal/Disc. She was well balanced for PVP and PVE. When the Expansion came out, I kept the same specs as I lvled to 70. When I started raiding with my guild again, she became pretty useless. Paladins tend to be better healers and where mainly used as tank healers. Priest where there to heal the groups and dispel spells but pallys could do that already. Priests just didn't get really buffed for the Expansion in terms of healing. They buffed them more for Shadow instead. With Shadow, you can help do dps, with Vampric Embrace enhanced you can cast it on a enemy and any shadow dmg YOU do, everyone in your group gets health AND mana, and if you have a warlock in your group, you can help him or her do MORE dmg. All and all, they made the shadow priest more like a battery which is really cool BTW.

I still have my priest and I kept trying to get better gear but it was just taking too long. My guild at the time was still doing Kara and Gruul, and gear rarely dropped for me. Farming to get better gear sucked because I couldn't do any where near as much dmg as other classes and since I'm playing on a PVP server, I'm very squishy and a target favored by Horde. I couldn't join any other guilds because I wasn't getting any gear fast enough and I couldn't do Arena because they wanted me to have better gear. I would do BG to get better gear but in order to actually get points you have to either be in a game with a group or if you pug on your own your team has to win. You could find the person who is the best on your team and heal them the whole time and rack up points that way but usually in a pug, you don't.

My friend on my server plays as a Warlock and he is in the #1 guild on our server. They downed Illidan months ago. I asked him about his guild and what they used his priests for. He said they mainly just have the priest that are disc spec give everyone fort and divine spirit and sit it out. The Shadow Priest go with them into the raids and use Pallys as healers because the are great batteries and help do Shadow dmg. Every once and a while they will have a healing priest go with them.

I'm having a lot of fun playing my warlock class because she can do so much dmg and everything is easier to do. I still get gangked from time to time but if I have my Soul Stone up, I can resurrect immediatly and kill them. I've actually had way more fun with my Affliction Warlock then my Priest.

If you want to play the Priest class, by all means, go ahead and do so, just expect to stay Shadow speced to get the best gear and farm faster. Who knows, maybe you will have better luck then me then I did with my priest. With the latest patch they made lvling much much faster and easier. You get way more experience now when you finish a quest. I've known people to lvl 4 times in a day in the 40's. They've improved a lot of things with the new patch recently and I love it even more.

Oh and I almost forgot, I'm a full time student, and a full time employee. I'm also graduating next semester with my associates. Just get all your work done before you play.

I've got a 70 Resto Shammy http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Sargeras&n=Ruinz and from what I've seen every class has its roll and just because your . If you really have trouble getting gear Xenomaniac pick up tailoring and roll on the T-4 stuff. Preists have a very vaulable place in Raids Prayer of Mending is a must imo. I'm also more casual play 3 nights a week and really enjoy it that way. On Saturdays when my wife is working I do Heroics and farm up some gold through dailies and skinning.

I'll also make a quick comment on the guy below. Moderation(much like what's on this forum) is a very good thing if you can't control yourself then stay away. BUT just becaues YOU hae that problem doesn't mean that EVERYONE else does. You are entilted to your opion but when its already been said 11 times on this one thread not to mention the 100's of times mentioned on others it gets a little old. I'm not defending the game, I will admit there are times that I'm like damn its hard to keep up but reality sets back in and I go back to having fun, it gets old seeing the same crap everytime someone mentions these 3 little letters and its always the same thing. BTW none of the things below have happened to me I wonder if I'm not playing the game right? This summer I played wow was on two softball teams continued to excell at work and my relationship w/ my wife grew more then it ever had.

Run
Your going to get fat and die at a young age
Girls will hate you
your life is over
You'll forget what the sun looks like
you'll loose your job and all your friends.
I'm sure there's more but you get the idea.

Here's what I've gained from wow:
Continued a good friendship w/ two Navy friends who PCS'd when otherwise I'd probably just lost touch
Gained a couple of good friends
and
Had a hell of a lot of fun.

It's a game as long as you remember that and never take it too serious it'll remain "All Good". I'll admit sometimes I think of Dollars as Gold and I've stayed up a little too late at times trying to finish something but the same can be said about almost anything that someone in there 20's does. I can honestly say that the www.hardforum.com was where most of my free time(when the wife is watching TV, at work, or reading a book) went in the past. Now that's just channeled to WoW my wife will get a little upset if those three days I mentioned stack together like it sometimes happens but she gets over it or I don't play and OMG miss a Raid.

BTW Does anyone have a link to the WoW Server thread?

Wow is like paying to destroy your body.
I used to do free weights, push ups, crunches and squats while on the bird or waiting for the guild to buff/pot up for the next boss attempt, and of course i would run 2 miles every other day before I even turned on my computer. I do the same when I die early in a CS:S round. nobody is forcing you to sit on your ass all day and not move, if you get out of shape playing wow it's not the game's fault but yours, many other games even don't give you as many chances to stand up as wow does with all its downtime.

One other thing. They have increased the exp gain from questing in the 20-60 bracket. You can literally fly through lvls now. A buddy of mine and myself are in the middle of a new toon grind. Just over 4 days /played time, and we're lvl 56. That's playing casually an hour or two a night.

Play casually. Its a game and it doesnt have to be an addiction.

Are you serious? You got to level 56 in say 5 days playing 2 hours a night? What classes are you playing?

I sold my account with a 70 mage in T4 and a 66 warrior I was leveling a few months ago. But if you level that fast, I might make an account and just be a healing pally. I really want a buddy i can chill and level with though and have a blast playing together. I just wonder if leveling a pally is going be a pain in the ass?

Anyway, this game can be addicting. But I found that I didn't play it much more then I would play any other game, and I could limit my self. Plus, when your done playing and your 70 with decent gear you can sell your account and you actually make at least a 100 bucks. You cant say that for many games. So if your worried about the monthly cost, your actually making money in the end if you decide to sell your account. I used the money to buy a itouch 8gb ($300)

You might be confusing playing for just over 4 days with having played the game for just over 96 hours. Or maybe not. Just checking first. It wasnt a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, DING! i'm 56. This is your /played (type /played and you'll see your time played total) time in hours, totalling just over 4 days played.

But... if you already knew this aspect, i'll continue. I'm on a Feral Druid, and my buddy is working an Enhancement Shaman. So basically we have all of the tankability, damage, and healing to steamroll through any quest that we come across. We're also not grinding mobs, we're grinding quests. With patch 2.3 there were HUGE buffs to quest exp from lvl 20-60 to what, if i'm remembering correctly, turned out to be a gain of 2/3 more exp per turn in... maybe it was 1/3... cant remember right. In any case... quest grinding. Its where its at for levelling.

What we do is try not to return to town unless it is needed for quest turn ins. We completely deplete an area of quests, clearing our questlog, and turn them in in chunks. This removes the travel time back and forth to town. Its not needed to get turn ins every time you finish a quest.

We dont always train right away either. We bash away at quests until we find something that leads us to a town with a trainer. Our classes are also those that do not have to keep restocking on equipment such as arrows, bullets, food or water. We use what is dropped. This further reduces our need to enter town.

I also have a lvl 70 Hunter who is 375 Leatherworking / 375 Skinning. He provides us with any armor we need in our level grind. Coupled, i disenchant all unuseable looted items on my Druid and turn it into Enchants to further strengthen us. My partner is Herbalism/Alchemy, so he provides us with the potions needed to speed our grind, meaning Defense pots on my end, and AGI pots on his to further increase his already huge Crit. I hoard mobs while in Tank form, and we AOE them down.

We have done this a couple times already, so when we get a quest we generally know where to go to get X mobs. We also know which quests to skip.

I have a paladin alt that I play from time to time (not very often) and I can demolish things doing AOE grinding as protection spec. Then again, I also have some of the best available gear and enchants for the level so I'm sure that helps considerably. Just make sure you have a mage conjure you a bunch of food and water prior to starting a leveling session so you can use your abilities, such as holy shield, more liberally. Without water you have to play more conservatively. You won't want to spec protection until level 35, however, when you can get blessing of sanctuary and reckoning.

Hmm, thanks for the clarity. Would you have still leveled a character without the 2.3 patch?

Yeah, probably. I just would have had to have done more quests pre-60 to get there. As it is, with the enhancement to quest reward experience, i'm outlevelling alot of the quest content I hit previously with my other toons before I can even get to them. Blizzard is basically making it so that we can completely bypass content and get to Outland faster. This will be my 4th toon over 60, so I know where my particular quest grind run leads me, and i'd say i'm about 4-5 levels ahead of myself now compared to my previous runs. Hell... we hit lvl 59 last night and only just got finished with the quests in Winterspring. We havent even touched Western or Eastern Plaguelands.

So now, we have the option of just going to Outland and starting, but i think we're going to hold out until we're 60, and just completely tap out the new quest exp buff. Once we get to Ouland the quest exp is high anyway, so it'll be a good transition.

Hey I am thinking of picking it up again and have a 20something pally on black dragonflight. If you do start playing again let me know as I may be on already. I have a small group of friends that plays spread out throughout the days.

I've managed to leave WoW.

level 70 hunter and mage. level 62 pally. Epic fast flying mount and 4k gold. tons of exhalted faction across the board, dragonscale LW to 350 with some nice purple patterns.... Just abandoned, then sold.

I'd still love to get into a new mmo, but there's nothing too inspiring right now. Frankly, I'm glad to have the free time (been about 10 months now I think).
