Advice for my upgrade

I need to upgrade my gaming pc a bit. It's getting dated and I'm not getting the performance I want.

I mainly play WoW, BF3 and as soon as I upgrade, BF4. Ect,

Right now my parts are:
FX 4100
Asrock 980fx Deluxe 4
Sapphire Radeon HD 6870
2x4 Gskill 1333
Antec 620W psu
120g SSD main drive / 500gig storage

Now my main problem I think is my cpu. WoW is an older game and it lags quite a bit when i have 25 people on my screen spamming spells at a boss. It gets down in the single digit frames sometimes. And with my video card I feel like thats kind of ridiculous. Not a fantastic card but not a pos either.

So I'm not sure if I could throw an 8350 in my board or just get a newer i5 plus mobo/ram.

Or would I just be better off getting a new video card?

My budget is somewhere around 600, maybe more if my wife is in a good mood. Just want some more FPS in my games.

What would you upgrade if it were your machine?

Get a new CPU AND a new GPU! Who says you have to compromise?

The Core i5 is the best balance of single-threaded performance, while being no pushover in the most advanced games. It's about twice as fast as your existing quad core :D

You can reuse the ram. Faster than 1333 makes absolutely no difference on an Intel system, and ram is so ungodly expensive right now it would kill any value in your upgrade. Your PSU can probably handle another upgrade before you replace it.

Option 1: Drop roughly $275 for a Core i5 + B85 motherboard and save the rest for a monster GTX 770:D

Or if you want to overclock, drop a little more on a Core i5 4670k plus entry-level Z87 motherboard (expect to pay $330). Spend the rest on a GTX 760:

The GTX 760 is almost twice as fast as your current card, and the GTX 770 is over twice as fast. That's more than enough performance boost!

Unfortunately, your motherboard will not support any of the newer AMD CPUs. As such, for a CPU upgrade, you're looking at a new motherboard. Since you're looking at a new CPU and motherboard, just go Intel. As defaultluser showed, you can get a new CPU, mobo, and GPU for close to your budget.

Though what case do you have? Also, do you have the Antec High Current Gamer or Neo Eco 620C 620W PSU?

I consider the Core i5 an excellent investment. I am still using my stock-clocked 2500k in games after three years, and will probably not find a worthwhile upgrade until Intel's Skylake in 2015.

Of course, I'm not even sure if I'd NEED the upgrade in 2015

The upgrade I suggested is balanced because it's not clear what his limitation is. By doubling BOTH CPU and GPU power, he's guaranteed to DOUBLE performance :D

If his FX 4100 is limiting him, then this would be a waste of $600. And even if he could limp along on it, he would still have to shell out for a CPU upgrade in the next few months. This should keep him covered for the next 3 years (GPU) and 4-5 years (CPU).

Thank you for the in depth research for me. That's spot on what I was looking for. Probably go with a 760.

PSU is a neo eco.
