I am looking to unload a lot of my "junk" .. and just go with one rig that can produce some decent ppd .

160gb Sata (broken tab on sata plug in, but still works just fine)

anyhoo ... if I could sell some of this stuff off .. what should I shoot for as far as parts to setup as a dedicated folder(/file server possibly) in my cold garage here in Montana..?
 
A 2600K rig, or a cheap second hand 2P 1366 setup would be the two most cost effective choices. Best thing to do would be to run it on linux if you can because it will give you a healthy points boost. If you get a dual quad/ dual hex 1366 setup and linux you can run bigbeta which gives a 40-50% points boost over most bigadv units. I have a dual quad 1366 rig @ 3.2Ghz which pulls 94K PPD on 6904, and 104K PPD on 6903, about 72K PPD on 6900, and about 40-47K PPD on SMP.
 
As UT said, you will get over 80k ppd from a dual quad 1366 setup for about the same as a 2600k. At the risk of shameless self promotion, if you combined the quads that Doozer is selling with the HSF and ram I had up and then purchased this board open box from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131378R) you would be up and running for around 650. This would put out roughly twice the ppd of the 2600k and should be very respectable on power efficiency as well.
 
Agreed that Dual 1366 or a 2600K is the best bang for the buck these days.

8 core AMD is great, but they aren't generally quite as cheap or readily available second hand as dual 1366 rigs these days. Particularly around these forums.

In additon 1366 systems, particuarly higher clocked chips, will deliver substantially better single threaded performance and allow the rig to be effective in other roles such as a workstation.
 
You can get 6128s on newegg for $240ish, but they are only 2.0Ghz and g34 boards can be pricey and odd case sizes... So i guess that answers my questions
