My uncle uses adobe illustrator to edit and make map files for GPS companies and he's having a problem. When opening a particular file, the process is showing up 700,000 bytes when Illustrator is running a 16,000 byte file. It shuts down when doing the main map file from low memory. I dont know how to fix this...does anyone have any solutions? We tried upgrading the ram, he has 4 gb on his machine, core 2 duo, and x1300 graphics card.

Well generally it uses a lot of space on your hard drive, depending on the image detail, size, etc. Trying going in the Illustrator preferences and checking things like cache size, drives, etc.

Here's a more detailed description:
The Illustrator file that shuts down is a map that is about 16,000 bites. It has gone along just fine but I can open it just fine, make changes just fine (like add a short line that is labeled ACR 7359) and when I go to save the changes, it stops with an "out of memory" message on the screen. It will let me close it out but I can't save that change. Another time it shuts down is when I am printing the map. I "print" it as a .pdf file. The .pdf file is the actual file I print. I tried to save the whole 80 pages. It would get to about 15 and I would get a message asking if I wanted to send Microsoft a message. It would shut down the program entirely. I had to go back and do 10 pages at a time as a print to .pdf. This is in a pagemaker program called InDesign, also Adobe. When I print, I will print the odd pages then run those pages through printing the even pages in reverse order. If I try to print 1 to 10, then 11 to 20, then 21 to 30 and so on, it will shut the computer down if I try to do more than 1 to 30 at once. I get the message asking me if I want to tell Microsoft and the program shuts down.

I can live with the print thing but I am at a point of needing to add a water company on the map and would like to use the whole map instead of having to section out part of it. Sectioning out involves cutting the roads at the section as they copy as the entire road. Quite a pain.

After you have the file open, select all (Ctrl + A), open a new file (Ctrl + N) and paste into the new file (Ctrl + V) and then save.

I've done this on several files in the past. Some kind of file corruption may have occured, or the original file may have all kinds of swatches or actions or other things in it that don't need to be there.

If that doesn't work, just contact Adobe support.

At first I thought it was a memory problem where it kept filling up, ran out, then the program crashed, but since you have 4GB already, you can't go much higher with most systems. It could still be that for a map that detailled you'll need more RAM, but I'd talk to Adobe experts before buying anything.

trick_m0nkey, the problem you're having printing out of indesign is most likely a font issue. My co-workers and I have had the *exact* same problem (indesign basically refuses to print or export to PDF the whole way through, you have to go 10-20 pages at a time) a few times and every time it's been a font issue. If you get a chance, use the replace fonts function to replace all the fonts in your document (and source artwork) with something generic like myriad, and try again.

As far as illustrator being a POS, well.... it is. Adding more RAM helps, but when that isn't an option and you're dealing with documents too large for mere mortal systems to handle, the only thing you can do is quit and restart illustrator. This gets extremely annoying, but at least RAM is cheap now :p

Thank you nero that has been the most helpful input so far. I'll try that out and let you guys know.
