What’s Nintendo thinking by being so secretive? While price, tech specs, battery life, and more may be a mystery until next year, we do have some idea of what it will or will not support. It is weird how they showed Skyrim on the system when it hasn’t even been confirmed yet.

Nintendo confirmed to IGN that "the main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen." The dock's main functions are TV output and power/charging, Nintendo said, which suggests the dock won't actually have much in the way of additional hardware to enable higher-fidelity play on an HDTV. The Switch can't play physical 3DS or Wii U games: This Destructoid translation of a Japanese Famitsu story confirms that the Switch will not play physical games from Nintendo's most recent consoles.

Color me not shocked... I had a very strong feeling that's the only thing that was used for.

The Switch can't play physical 3DS or Wii U games

Did anyone actually expect this?

Can it connect to Wii / Wii U peripherals is what I want to know, I'm going to assume no. I have more money in them than the console itself.

I was hoping the dock would do something. So this thing is a big gameboy with hdmi out and removable controllers. Joy

If you don't use the tablet as a tablet, the console ends end being way more expensive than it should be to just play games on your TV.

The tablet itself looks too big to use on the go, especially with the controllers on the sides.

Some had their hopes up when they saw carts being used. My biggest concern is what the front glass is made from how much on board storage it has and if that is upgrade-able or you get what comes with it no more no less and there are multiple sku with 128gb 256gb and 500gb storage. I am hoping but i know it wont happen but a m.2 drive inside the console with a removable panel to access it to replace it. Then the console will format it and encrypt it and we will be good to go.

But future sense is telling me it will be not user open able the battery will be around 4200-5000 mA the device will have 1-2 maybe 4 gb of ddr4L ram the sku will be 256 gb and 500gb for the pro model it will be soldered into the mobo it will have wifi b/g/n/ac no cellular coverage interplay with others will be done by wifi direct or blue tooth but more likely wifi direct the display will be a 1080p ips the unit will have a fan that will be the first issue people will have it will burn out prematurely. Oh and battery life will be around 4-6 hours seemingly shorter than most people wanted... oh and the dock will only be port expansion and charging it has 2 usb ports on the dock that can be seen in the video.

I have to say nintendo better have some killer titles that will only go on this dock or this is going to be a flop similar to the wii u

its a new platform!!? i wish i knew what the graphics specs are going to be like?

with the exception of nx exclusives i dont think this is worth buying over a pc or ps4.

Well that's disappointing about the dock. I guess we'll have to see how it performs in the end because the Wii U was laggy as shit.

Well Tegra is Arm so of course it won't be compatible with the previous architectures. This really reeks like the next Ouya in the making. Nvidia found another unwitting sap to dump those tegra chips no one was buying. Nintendo are about to learn the hard way why Nvidia has been kicked out of the rest of the console market.

I'm less and less convinced that this thing is a good idea. The lack of motion controls (mostly, support for the piles of Wii/Wii U controllers everyone already has) makes me even less likely to get it. The motion controls were cheesy, but there were some games that were great, goofy fun. It just seems like this is what they really wanted the Wii U to be... And it still isn't a good idea.

Even my kid said this after reading the announcement.
The tablet is too big (doesn't look like it would fit in a pocket), looks too fragile, and the snap on controllers would get lost the 1st week.

The Clamshell design on the 3DS makes for a smaller device when not in use, and when closed protects the screens, plus there's no separate parte to loose, other than the pointer (and they are cheap to replace). Much better design for a portable device.

yes. Wii could play Gamecube games. Wii U could play Wii games. DS could play Gameboy Advanced games. 3DS could play DS games. New 3DS could play 3DS games.

So people had hoped that they could still play their old games on the new system.

Exactly my thoughts. While they could have used the same cartridge form factor as the 3DS, there is nothing in recent Nintendo history to suggest that they would do that.

My only concern right now is battery life. I hope this turn out to be false or the result of someone on the inside commenting on an early prototype.

That isn't true at all. That is what they have been doing with handhelds for the last few generations.

As for battery, I guess they have time to try to improve that. But at the same time I can see 3 hours being about right given what we are looking at here and its size.

but its nintendo!! Mario! i been waiting for this for a long time.
And it is looking like a ball drop this should be the replacement for the 3ds not the Wiiu they should use a lesser tegra or at least a more conservative set one so they could drop the fan make the whole device thinner perhaps a 5 or 6 inch screen amoled make the controllers part of the system to keep size down then use 3ds carts they could do the upper and lower screen side by side and have it go single screen if the user wants.

I don't like it. It reminds me of the "bait and switch" con.

And that reminds me of the way they wanted to con let's players into paying them.

I think that may be, kinda, the point. The whole system, including dock and controllers, seems to be rather small, so it'll look inoffensive next to any dvr/console/home theatre setup.

They should launch this thing at below $300, with a console seller like zelda included and some of the best wiiU games (splatoon, bayonetta 2) ported over in the launch line up.

The name is kinda on point what the system is capable of, but otherwise it is a bit uninspired.

On the plus side there should be no confusion amongst the general populace if this system is a new console or an addon like there was with WiiU.

At the same time, it won't fit very well next to any of those things. you have to be able to slide the tablet out of the dock. Which means you can't put it into a shelf next to your PS4 / Xbox One / DVR.... this will have to sit next to the TV like they are showing or on a table to have easy access to getting the tablet out if you are planning on using it like that.

As for the games, no way they will include $180 worth of games plus the system. It will cost them more than $120 to make this system and so doing what you just said will make them lose their asses on hardware. It has already been rumored for prices and they have already said that they are going to sell this console for profit. I doubt you will see it ship with a game of any type short of some silly mini game thing unless you buy some type of bundle pack.

Are you sure? I still don't see how people thought that the Wii U was an add-on. So they could see this new tablet which is being shown playing games that we all know exist on the Wii U (expect Skyrim) and this this is the new Wii U tablet. You can already play games on that instead of your TV. So basically they created a better Wii U tablet.

I'M waiting for someone to come up with a " Bait and Switch" nickname for this.....:)

How am I supposed to play Angry Birds on it if it doesn't have a touchscreen? Total fail.

Most confusing launch in recent history. So is this replacing the handheld 3DS line, and the Wii? Or will Nintendo market this as a console, and still make dedicated handhelds? If this is also a 3DS replacement, the lack of backwards compatibility is very strange, especially considering the trailer made it seem like they were using the same game carts as the 3DS.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about the lack of a touch screen. When I had the DS, I hardly ever used the touch screen, and I especially hate using on-screen controls on phones. Very unwieldy.

they are replacing the wiiu with this not the 3ds they have said that much dont ask where i just remember seeing it as a answered question. they should in my opinion be replacing the 3ds with this and make it so it can do the wii u main controllers duties when paired to a wii u Before anyone says different architectures or some bull like that what is in the wii u tablet thing is nothing that cant be emulated on the tablet...

As for the cartridges they looked thicker than 3ds i assume they are just slightly keyed different... As they have stated 3ds games cant be played on the switch... with only marginal plans for compatibility using the store and downloaded content...

This is business, not fanboy high school.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with AMD getting on their hands and knees and letting MS/Sony have their way for free.

not what was being referred to but amd selling the chips for the consoles at cost aside...

That was more of a reference to nvidia's less than stellar sales of the shield line leading to them not putting out a new shield portable, shield tablet, shield tv this year... they outright killed the tablet line so get your k1 while you can. The rumor mill thinks that the nintendo nx (i wont call it switch that is dumb) is why they cose not to make a 2016 or 2017 shield tablet.

It would've been cool if Nintendo was able to squeeze in the Wii U gamepad tech into the Switch, so you could use it as a normal Wii U gamepad (for backward compatibility).

Still, I was hoping there was more to the 'dock', and was dreaming that it would equal future power increases (more powerful dock releases in the future). Still excited for the system, as I still believe it to be the perfect pairing for my PC (versus a Scorpio or PS Pro).

Not to get to off topic but this is so disappointing as I love my shiled TV. Even over wifi streaming games or anything else for that mattter was pretty much a breeze.

It would be dumb if nvidia abandons Android gaming so they could work with Nintendo on this trainwreck. They could have become the go-to Android gaming solution. Not that Google seems particularly interested.

Just more speculating nothing is confirmed. The original quote.

"The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

Direct quote doesn't really confirm or deny the possibility of it upclocking the system when the dock is providing power to it.

In any case the original plans for the system was not to replace the wiiu or 3ds but to serve a something in between from the looks of it nothing has changed with that plan. Original interview in 2015 Third Quarter Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ending March 2015 - Q & A

I'm not expecting it compete anywhere near the ps4/xboxone in performance but nintendo fans should know what to expect by now.

even as a train wreck it will sell far higher numbers than Nvidia could dream to sell with device they could try to invent. People buy Nintendo for certain games. Hell I am half thinking about getting a Switch for Legend of Zelda. Which you will have people buy the system for 1st party games as that is what they are known for. The fact that the Switch will have a true Pokémon game for the first time ever will draw fans to it. They might not sell like crazy, but at this point it is still going to sell better than any Nvidia product has.

My wild theory is the Switch is Nintendo's last-ditch effort to stay in the hardware business. If that bombs the last resort would becoming a iOS-exclusive Sega which is actually more lucrative than their current business model, but that would mean tying their fate to a much stronger entity.

What I do know for sure is everybody will be dumping Android in droves if the latter happens.

Heh, I meant to say the ports should be included in the (post) launch lineup, not necessarily included in the console package.

Now that you mention it, though ... ah well, one can always dream ^_^.

I want to know why everyone in their commerical was 18-25 years old. Lets not forget that their biggest demographic by an overwhelming margin has been 6-14 year olds.

The same reason said kids dig the COD and BF series so much.

Do you honestly believe a completely portable console is going to be close to a PS4?
When specs are announced, Switch will be far closer to a PS3.
Which is pretty amazing for a portable.
