Adding SATA-III to X58.

I've been juggling the idea of replacing my i7-980 (eVGA x58 Classified) build with a 3770k or 3930k - specifically for the upgrade to SATA-III drives (I run many Vertex 4's). After spending some time crunching the numbers, I simply cannot justify a $1000 investment in processor/mobo/ram just to upgrade to 6GB/s drive speeds when the i7-980 is just as good if not arguably better than the SB and IB counterparts and is not worth upgrading.

What would be my best option for a PCI-E RAID controller for the x58 board? I've already tried to use a Highport RocketRaid 640, but I could only ever get the raid controller to function if I turned off the onboard SATA-II controllers (a limitation specifically with the x58 chipset from what I understand, since it works fine on my 780/780 boards), and I was never able to get consistent read/write at anywhere near full SATA-III speeds on my drives.

Am I basically SOL unless I upgrade to 1155 or 2011?
 
If you're running "Many" Vertex 4's, you usually only get two good intel SATA III ports, so an motherboard/cpu upgrade wouldn't really solve your problem.

I did this with my P55 chipset board, with i7-875k, and picked up a LSI 9240-4i for ~$200. It worked fine in tandem with my 4 velociraptors in R0/R5 on the onboard ports, and 2x crucial M4's in the LSI card.

I guess I felt like I spent a lot of cash for not really any noticeable performance gain, and loss of smart info, but I did have those consistent benchmark numbers that I was looking for.

If you want to run more than two SSD's pick up a nice hardware RAID card and put all your storage on that.

On the cheap, the forum really likes the IBM M1015, and I suspect in RAID0 or whatever you're using you will get the numbers you're looking for. Note that this is a rebranded LSI card, and on the whole I liked my LSI card and many other LSI cards I've used. I've also used Areca cards and Adaptec cards and been pleased with the speeds and interfaces for them.

I would stay away from highpoint cards, they generally are frowned upon.
 
I use an LSI 9265-8i with my X58 P6T6 WS, works like a champ.
 
hotcrandel : actually 9240-xi or M1015 might give you good sequential benchmarks, but they suck at IOPS, and so not good for SSDs.

The 9265-8i with fastpath key is the only game in town (with maybe the equivalent areca) but it's not exactly cheap, so if many vertex is two, it might make more sense to go all the way and buy a new shiny rig, maybe could be justified if you add 64GB of quad channel RAM and use some as a ramdrive.
 
I would just use the SATA III SSD on your intel SATA II ports. Although you will not win at sequential benchmarks, you will not lose much performance in most real world applications. That is unless you do large sequential transfers all day.

I don't blame ya for not wanting to shell out the money but this question had been asked and answered over and over.

The answer always is forget about it unless you want to spend the big bucks. :)
