Adding file to Exception List (AVG)

Hi, the file "texmod.exe" is a program designed to identify and replace texture files in computer games such as Guild Wars and Tomb Raider. It can be downloaded with either link below:

http://rapidshare.com/files/107049295/Texmod.zip

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=L4N3A6SD

AVG tells me this file is harmful and tries to block it. I have since added it to the exception list, but whenever I browse the folder where texmod.exe is stored, or browse a folder with a shortcut to textmod.exe, the texmod icon does not load, and my computer stalls/hangs for approx 10-15 seconds. After this time, the icon is displayed and I can access the file.

Why is this? How do I make it so AVG fully ignores texmod.exe? I don't want AVG to keep accessing the file to check it, I already told AVG the file is safe.

I appreciate any help

Just contacted customer support and they refuse to help me because I'm using the free version instead of their professional pay version...

In the GuildWiki entry for Modifying, here, the urls listed for TexMod are:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UNU4JK8T
http://rapidshare.com/files/107049295/Texmod.zip
http://files.filefront.com/Texmodzip/;8884025;/fileinfo.html

I notice that the megaupload link you listed is different. It may quite possibly be a virus-infected version. Try these instead.

I used to use AVG, but have been trying out Avira instead. Avira has not raised any objections to Texmod, though I did have to google a way to remove the annoying pop-up from the free version of Avira. I don't recall AVG having any problem with Texmod back when I was using it, so... I'm thinking you got a bad version.

If you Google Texmod and AVG, you will see it's a common problem. I will however, try another copy but I don't think it's anything to do with it, I reall don't.

Downloaded the rapidshare version (which was exactly the same as the one I have), as well as from other mirrors and AVG keeps stalling my computer for a while.

Can anyone with AVG download texmod and see if it does anything to your computers performance?

Interesting, when I google AVG and Texmod, AVG is quoted, here, as saying that they would remove Texmod from the detection list on their next update... in 2007. Is it possible that your AVG hasn't updated since then? What version of AVG are you running? They're up to 8.5 now; if you still have 7.5, then the updates may have stopped without you having realized it.

But then, in this thread, there's comments that antivirus packages don't see Texmod as a virus every time. Curiously, that thread comes from exactly one year ago, and someone suggested a theory that it has something to do with Memorial Day.

It may just be that an AVG definition update unfixed the fix they did in 2007. I can only report that Avira (which has one of the highest detection rates in the business) does not report Texmod as a virus even when I run a full system scan while Texmod and Guild Wars are running. So I would suggest switching to Avira, to rule out a real virus being present and to verify that AVG is giving a false positive.

Yes, I run AVG 8.5 with the latest updates.

I have been looking at other anti virus software and over at the Vista forum, there is a PDF file you can download with reviews on many anti virus applictions. The review mentions protection, false reports and scan times. Avira came out as one of the best, also did NOD32 and a few of the pay ones. Avira beat AVG in most tests, so I will uninstall AVG and try Avira now.
