Acoustic Management? this is on a maxtor drive, how do I get rid of it? is it possible? Sisoft SANDRA says that it is effecting perfomance, so I would like to get rid of it, thanks

It will have louder seeks and possibly more of a 'Whine' idle, and dosent effect performance THAT much. Trust me it's not really worth disabling expecially on the maxtors; I hear they are loud with it off.

Check on maxtor's site for the software to copy to floppy or cd; my Hitachi had the required utility on their drivers/dl section.

Anyone know of how to turn this off on Maxtor drives? Their site has nothing for it.

The peformance gain is around 8 percent in seek times according to what I read about it.

9ms seek time becomes 9.71 seek times with acoustic management on quiet mode, 5400 rpm drives perform better than that.

OK, finally figured out where to get the utility for Maxtor drives. AMSET is the name, and the one floating around the internet is an old version that doesn't work for new Maxtor drives. I found AMSET 4.00 on the full version of Ultimate Boot CD . Press F2 and right arrow a few times and look for AMSET.

Samsung's utility is called HUTIL, same thing press F2 and right arrow and look for it.

I did some tests. Both my Samsung SpinPoint SP1614C 160GB SATA and my Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L200P0 200GB PATA both are factory set at FAST. Three options are available on either drive, FAST, QUIET, OFF. The settings only affect the head movements, not the motor, so you will not hear a whining noise.

HD Tach 3.0.1.0 -Test were run in Quick Mode 8MB Zones
The Maxtor DiamondMax is on a nForce 2 IDE controller using the latest nVidia SW Drivers from the nForce 5.10 drivers
The SpinPoint is on a Silicon Image 3112 SATARaid controller using 1.0.56.0 drivers.

First thing I noticed in these results is that having Acoustic Management OFF instead of FAST results in higher CPU utilization. Secondly, The Maxtor is actually faster in FAST mode instead of OFF mode, the SpinPoint is faster in OFF mode than FAST mode. Thirdy, only seek times changed, and only marginally between FAST and OFF. I did not hear any difference in accoustics using the human ear method of testing. So rest assured, when Sandra says to turn off AM, don't worry about it. The drives are set for FAST from the factory and is probably best left that way.

EDIT: Ok, I benched Quiet Mode and added them. Quiet Mode takes a very large hit in the seek times, especially the Maxtor drive. I hear no real difference in noise with my ears, but like I said, both drives are already very quiet and the Samsung is known for it's low acoustic levels.

Quiet and Off would be the best comparison, but I thank you for your time taken to run these tests. For me, first thing I did on this Hitachi was notice the loud seeks, no whine and decided to turn on silent mode or w/e, and noticed about a 50% reduction on seek noise and was having a hard time finding if the drive was at all slower or not. May run some tests later today with HD tach and see how they run.. Quiet and Off.

Bump...

Are you gonna run the quiet vs off benches or should I? I didn't do it when I did the others since it was past 3am and I was getting sleeeeeepy. Let me know if you are gonna do it otherwise I can this evening.

Added quiet benches.
