I'm starting off a build using:

MSI 785GTM-E43 mobo
Phenom 2 BE 555 cpu
AC Freezer Pro rev. 2 cpu cooler
OCZ DDR2 PC 6400 2x2 GB
Galaxy 9500GT video card
WD 640gb hard drive
Corsair 400w ps
Coolermaster Elite 335 case

I thought this was gonna be a fast, straightforward build, but right after plopping my cpu in the socket, I ended up scratching my head. All of my after market coolers have utilized a front-back (west-east) alignment of fans. Looking at the directions for the Freezer Pro, there seems to be a top-bottom (north-south) fan configuration here. The mounting brackets provided by AC only mount on the top and bottom edge of the mobo's cpu bracket. When the corresponding brackets on the heatsink itself are connected to these mounting brackets, the fan is left in a north-south configuration. There isn't a separate bracket to replace the original mobo bracket to allow for a west-east fan configuration. The only bracket provided is for mounting an Intel cpu.

Am I having a brain fart here and missing something obvious?? I checked their website and it's completely useless. The "installation" help is the same shitty set of diagrams that came with it in the first place. I can't imagine why they would want the heat coming from the cpu to be directed up to the power supply intake or down towards my video card.

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints or tips. Hopefully I'm just missing something obvious.

Well I did some more searching and apparently it is designed to work with the fan in the north-south direction. I found a thread where Bill Parrish mentioned that reversing the rear case fan to pull air in (instead of out) improved cooling when using this cooler.

Basically for AMD users this product only works with North/south. Intel users get to have the correct way. This is because some companies treat AMD users like second class citizens, and you have just experienced that.

If North/south is unacceptable to you, the Noctua U9B cooler is the same size, has way better performance, and comes with a great mounting system for both AMD and Intel.

EDIT: just read your post, don't go messing up your case airflow like that man.

Yes, they changed the orientation of this cooler. I noticed the same thing when I built my system, but thankfully the top 80mm fan in my Thermaltake Armor VA8003BWS by default is an intake, so it matches nicely with the new configuration.

Grats for the new build. Best of luck to you.

thanks for the reply but this cooler has been just sitting around so I'd really like to use it. Sucks that AC would design this thing to work in such a dumb ass fashion for AMD cpu's. I'll see what the temps look like with the fan on the south vs the north end.

thanks again

wish my coolermaster 335 had a top blow hole to use as intake or exhaust! Where my my Dremel??:D

Thanks for the feedback!
