there is little to no performance gain. only with 1600x1200 res and aa and af turned on will you see any improvements. It will be only a frame or two higher than the 128 meg version. Save the $60.
 
The 9800Pro 256MB 256bit can be flashed (after replacing stock cooler) to an XT I believe. Don't know if that helps you.

Good choice. The extra ram is barely worth it on the x800/pro's- you really need a top end card, a brand new game (far cry), and a nice display to use 256mb vram right now.
