I'm about to buy a new Dell UltraSharp U2711 for everyday use, gaming, web browsing, occasionally movie.

I wanted a 120Hz monitor but I to my knowledge there aren't any big (>27") 120Hz monitors out there.

Is this a good choice or should I wait ? thoughts?

Other than the mythical Asus and the latest announcement of the Acer HN274H 120Hz 3D, there's no other 27" 120Hz...

Kinda depends if you want an IPS, which I assume you want a nice quality panel if you're looking at the U2711. ;)

I don't like Acer :p
had only bad experiences with their hardware.

Asus 3d monitor is a lie

OP, I would seriously wait for the 27" 2560x1440 Samsung SA850 which ships this Spring. Looks much better than the U2711 and it should be cheaper due to the fact its PLS and not IPS.

I understand the enthusiasm for new technology, but is there any actual evidence for any of the above statements? I am intrigued by the Samsung offerings, but it seems a lot of people are enjoying a bit of irrational exuberance.

We've seen some viewing angle shots from Samsung marketing people on mobile-sized screens, and we've heard from marketing reps that production costs are ~15% lower than LG's IPS products. We don't know how PLS compares to IPS on image quality -- we know that the techs are related, and that Samsung alleges ~20 patents distinguish them. We know that Samsung has historically used less aggressive anti-glare coating on its PVA panels than LG uses on its IPS. We know that the models will be offered in a couple of sizes, with what appears to be a dark brushed-aluminum casing.

Is there anything else known?

We don't know what the image quality characteristics of the PLS panels will be, and we have no idea what the price point will be. If the bezels are some sort of duraluminium or similar nonsense, the 27" model could easily come in at 15C, regardless of panel manufacturing costs.

If the monitors represent a real breakthrough on the quality/price continuum, I'll be second in line to by a couple. But if I wanted a monitor now, I'd buy one of the current IPS offerings.

That is a good point cvgd, honestly no one knows how PLS will stack up against IPS. If the OP needs something NOW then IPS is the way to go, but with PLS right around the corner this Spring, imho buying an IPS monitor now may not be a good investment.

don't mind about me, I can wait a couple of months :)

don't say that out loud and give them a reason never to release it ;)
They'd screw you over if they knew it would increase sales on their other older models wich they need to get rid off

Samsung doesn't actually have any current models in this market segment. The closest is one of their cPVA offerings or the 2443bwt, which is TN. The 305T, 305T+, 275T, and 245T have been off the market for years.

I recommend that you go check out the 27" apple cinema display at an apple store if you get a chance, in the interest of checking your options. I don't see why anyone wouldn't since there are apple stores around with them set up. I don't know anywhere off hand that you can go see a 27" dell set up.

I also recommend checking the other threads if you haven't already. Myself and others have posted our opinions and some charts showing input lag, etc. I personally didn't want to deal with over-aggressive AG coating and a scaler causing input lag. I also preferred the glossy, scaler-less 27" cinema display since I can set my room up for it (desk and back of monitor facing the room rather than facing the wall catching direct light).

I'm one of the ones that returned their U2711 due to anti-glare, and I can assure you it is terrible. It's as though the entire screen has been smeared with oil and dusted with rainbow grit. There are other problems with the monitor, such as noise from the CCFL and the fact that it takes about 10 seconds to display when turning on/switching inputs. However, those would've been bearable to me if the AG hadn't been such a total deal-breaker.

Thats just some info I grabbed of the other threads.. there is more info and other opinions on those. Just search u2711 and do some reading.

For me, like I said I went with the 27" ACD IPS and a gpu upgrade. Around xmas I'll prob upgrade cpu+mobo+ram. Next year I'll see what the 27" 120hz monitors are looking like and decide if I want to go with three of those eventually or two more cinema displays (which might cost around the same .. +2 ACD or three 27" 120hz prob ~ $2k either way) -- or just stick with what I have longer.

i have a u2711, and to be honest i was a bit sceptical about the input lag that everyone talks about, saying that the u2711 just has too much. i can honestly say i noticed 0 difference going from TN to this u2711 in regards to input lag. its non existent and not noticeable by any means to the average person. if you gamed professionally or something, and had to have the absolute lowest input lag for your FPS game, i can maybe understand, but even still it is not noticeable. dont get sucked into that argument, get the monitor that provides features you want at a good price.

that is the main reason i got my u2711, extremely high res, IPS display and was on sale for $780 cnd. Also i dont find the AG unbearable to the point i have to return it. yea on white you can notice it a bit, but it does not bother me at all and i do have sensitive eyes

You can check out the Dell U2711 at a Microcenter if you have one near you. Just don't buy it form there as they will charge you full price.

There was a slight bit of lag comming from my U2311h to my U2711. Lag difference is comparible to slight variance between two decent wireless mice. Doesn't affect my gameplay, however. On the other hand, if the mouse was laggy, I wouldn't be able to stand it.

Input lag is more one part of a cumulative amount of lag when it comes to gaming. If there's a little bit of lag from say, your network card in an online game, plus input lag from a display, then lag from other sources (like a wireless mouse) then it all adds up. You could end up being a couple "frames" behind as it were.
