My understanding is that ATI's new Eyefinity gubbins is going to be supported on all of their 5xxx range, even the budget cards. We know for sure that a 5870 with 6 displayport connectors is due in a month or two. So perhaps in Q1, when ATI's low-end cards get released, we'll see a low-power-usage card with a similar feature of, say, 4 or 6 monitor support. I'm afraid that's only speculation though... but it would seem a bit silly (to me) for ATI to only offer the big expensive 5870 as a many-monitor graphics card when it's total overkill for non-gaming tasks.

I don't know of anything else available right now though, off the top of my head. Although didn't one of the ATI card-sellers once make a 4850x2 which could output to 4 screens? Again, probably not what you need since that's a massive card for a mini ITX system.
 
There are a few single-slot cards that support output to four monitors through funky 2xDVI<->Gigantor connectors. The problem is they all cost quite a bit as they are all sold as workstation cards.

Seems like a giant waste to me. I'd rather spend the money on two big monitors and the cheapest video card possible.

The only problems I can see are that maybe the video card is too long for the case, and the video card itself. I didn't know that the 8400GS could scale to 4 displays. Well it turns out it doesn't, there are two cores on the card. I'm not sure if the reviewer was just a retard or what, but this JATON corporation doesn't look legit. Anybody know any better solutions?

Zotac 9300ITX with a low-end, PCIe plug-in GeForce and an e3200, e5200, or e6300. (Or Zotac/Jetway 8200/8300 with X2 4850e or similar.)
 
That's true... couldn't you be using the onboard video as well, for a total of 4 ports?

You'd have atleast 1 HDMI to DVI but it should work... and be cheaper...
 
Yes, the onboard will stay on if you plug in a card using the same chipset (nV with nV, ATI with ATI). I'm not sure what's cheaper- an IONITX, a 9300ITX+Celeron, or an 8200+Sempron. If OP is considering an Atom rig anyway, he obviously doesn't need much CPU power, so it'll come down to which combination is cheapest. But any one of them will beat a quad-display PCI card. :)
 
Yea... the IONITX with a PCI-E x 16 slot isn't out yet... but will most likely be more expensive than the Zotac9300 w/ a cheap proc... might be pretty close though...
 
Sorry, shortcut FTL. IONITX was supposed to be IPX7A, the Pegatron board.
