The standard Wii controller config can sense 3D space and speed. Mouse is 2D working in 3D space. And the Nunchuck can sense motion too. Also, it can be for "Right-ies" or "Left-ies".
Yeah, there have been mice for the PC that do this to some degree, but they didn't sell as much as a standard mouse. So you can't design a game around it. For the Wii, every game developer knows a Wii user has this, and can design the game around it to some extent.
In the end, it's just an input device, that if released as an add-on would fail. The PowerGlove/U-Force/Running Pad failed because they were add-ons. The SG controller is useless outside of Guitar Hero, the Steel Batalion controller is useless outside of the game, DDR mats are useless outside the DDR (Well maybe SpaceChannel 5
