im going to be building a file server (storage & FTP), media streaming, video transcoding (maybe), minecraft server, and a small web host (maybe).

What I also want is to be able to use JDownloader and a XDCC client.

I was really considering using Ubuntu Server. But i'm not sure about jdownloader and the xdcc client part.

I considered Ubuntu Sever because it would be using less RAM.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? should I use a windows server? or another OS?
 
First and foremost, get a new PSU since the included PSU is pretty shitty. Go for the Corsair 430CX 430W PSU.

Second, go with Ubuntu Server plus the GUI of your choice since IIRC JDownloader needs a GUI.
 
the thought(s) of :

replacing the PSU totally phased me. i guess i'll have to upgrade that at a later point. power consumption and noise may be something i need to consider as well

and i didnt really think about adding a gui to ubuntu server.

I highly recommend replacing that PSU ASAP since it has a higher chance of damaging/killing your server compared to other PSUs.
 
since i'll be adding additional harddrives i may have 4 harddrives is it recommended to have more than 430 watt? or will it be fine? i will be adding more in the future

You'll be fine with 430W, just make sure you have enough SATA power connectors to power all your drives.
 
Danny, I went ahead and ordered a corsair 430x so it will arrive the same time. Thanks again.

Skillz, the power supply only has 4, however i'll only have 4 drives for now. using split adapters will be sufficient, yea?

so everyone agrees on going with Ubuntu Server?

I intend to use the same adapters for my file server as well. They don't draw enough amperage to really worry about IMO.

If you're familiar with Linux, then yes Ubuntu Server is the way to go. Otherwise, you might want to look into WHS.
