I pulled this out of a friends old computer and I knew I just had to do something with it.

This is it, the one that started it all. A couple years from now I'll have to put my X2 next to it.

x2

k6/2 500mhz----->k7(athlon xp tbreb b 2400+)--->k8 (athlon x2 3800+ am2)

thats my amd evolution, is used intel before (pentium mmx)

My progression:

K6-2 500Mhz --> Barton 2500+ @ 2.37GHz --> Venice 3500+ @ 2.5GHz --> Manchester 4600+ @ 2.7GHz

Oh don't get me wrong, my first AMD was a K6-2 300Mhz. Just this was the first Athlon, and I don't think its hard to say that the Athlon series has been their most successful processor ever.

Very Nice tribute.

K6-233MMX -> Athlon Tbird 800 -> Tbird 1000 -> XP 2000+ -> XP 2600+ -> XP 3200+ -> Opteron 170

westrock2000 that looks really nice.. I may do that my self with my first AMD

K6-600 (golden fingers overclcok) (I think I got 800Mhz out of her with a multiplyer change)
Tbird 1.4@liek 1.67 (hot ass bitch).
XP 1600+
XP 2600+M
s754 2800+
s939 3000+
s393 3700+
opteron 165

and i cant even remember all the chip in between. I think i had a 1.2Ghz tbird for a breif time, then many many 2500+ chips looking fo rthat sweet overclcoking chip before i got my 2600+M, I also remember a 2000+ pally that didnt do shit, alont with some random 2700+ 256k chip..

Its funny that you made this thread, as i was working in my garage today i ran across this. my first AMD! Somehow this bad boy has made it thru like 8 moves and many boxes and is still intact

Very nice. I have a processor collection and I may just do something like this for them.

Tbe Athlon was an important step for AMD. It's important to remember that before the Athlon (and to a lesser extent with the K6 series), AMD pretty much made knockoff Intel CPU's. It was Intel's denial of the license of the P2/3 bus that made AMD have to look elsewhere. It was a risky decision by them to completely turn their backs on the Intel architecture they had relied on for so long but I think it's safe to say that it definitely paid off. The Athlon was the defining turning point in the company and deserves special recognition.

Sigh... I always remove the Dice off of my old processors and use them to decorate random things :)

Course, at one time I did almost have 31 Pentium 3's of random clocks. Sold the good ones.

God I love when businesses liquidate their old technology. 31 working machines for under 45$

Cool :) My AMD 386-dx 40mhz started my AMDness for me, ive had so many since then itd take too long to count and post.

IBM 286 "Laptop" -> AMD 386 (cant remember speed) -> AMD 486 DX2 66 -> AMD 5x86 100 -> intel p2 233 (my only intel evar!!!) -> AMD K6-2 350 (i loved this summa bitch) -> AMD Duron 900 -> AMD thunderchicken 1.2 (so excited to get past 1 ghz!) -> AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (my first "P4") -> XP 2000+ -> XP 2500+ -> Athlon 64 3000+ -> Opteron 165

Still have all of em except the 386, 486 and 5x86 (the ones i wish i really had!)

I'll show you progression. Pentium 1 166mhz>, P1 200mhz>, P1 233mhz>, Pentium 2 300mhz>, P2 333mhz Socket 1>, P2 433mhz>, Pentium 3 533mhz Socket 2>, P3 850mhz socket 370>, AMD 1ghz K7>, AMD 2ghz K7 Socket A>, AMD 754 sempron 2500+>, AMD 754 A64 3000+>, finally AM2 X2 3800+. Over many years...

I remember when my AMD 1ghz kicked the old conroes butt before it was even made from a P3. Those where the good old days as where the days 3 months ago.

Overclock it! That would be funny.

Alrighty then:
-Amdek 386-16 - Intel. Retired but still works.
-Lapine 486-33 upgraded with 100mhz Overdrive cpu - Retired but still works.
-Locally built 486-66 upgraded with Evergreen 586-133 cpu. It rocked - Retired but still works.
-Compaq K6-2/500 - first AMD based system. Retired but still works.
-Compaq Athlon XP2000 upgraded to Athlon XP2400. Presently my wife's computer.
-Self built skt 754 Athlon 64 3400+ Clawhammer at work. Asus K8V mobo and VisionTek X800Pro AGP 8X video card. Upgraded to 3700+ Clawhammer. Still going strong 2 yrs after purchase/assembly.
-Self built skt 754 Athlon 64 3400+ Clawhammer at home w/Sapphire X800Pro PCI-e video card. Many configurations:
Asus K8N4-E Deluxe mobo originally w/Ultra PC3200 DDR400 (2x512)
Revised upgrades:
Abit NV8 mobo w/Crucial Ballistix PC3200 DDR400 (2x512)
skt 754 3000+ Venice
skt 754 3200+ Venice
present configuration: skt 754 3400+ Venice.
AMD has been very good to me so I stayed with them. Never bothered to move to skt 939 since the 754 has been so good to me.
Seeing all the older stuff is really cool. Great thread, OP.

this brings back old memories of my first build, last pc in my sig

This made me want to build a nice frame to show off the original P1-60 and some nice legacy goodies. How it's put and all is very nice.

IBM PS/1 > Packard Bell P1 75@90 > K6-233 @ 250 I believe > K6-2 266@300 > Slot A K7 600 > K7 Thunderbird 900@950(not a good overclocker) > K7 Thunderbird 1.2C @ 1.4 > 2400+ T-bred B @ 2.4 > Intel P4 2.8C @ 3.5 (Northwoods beat K7s at this time, before A64) > Athlon X2 3800+ @ 2.5 > Intel E6400 @ 3.2

I just followed the best value and performance

nice thread.. i have a copper top pentium 1 100mhz at home that's pretty cool

also, i keep my palamino 2100+ on my keychain bec it was my first amd chip that got me into computer .. hell i'm still in socket a now.. lol (going to a opty 146 next week though)

mal

Ah.... i still remember my first computer setup. k7 1.2ghz thunderbird, gigabyte mobo( GA- 7zx) ( 512 mem and super fast geforce 2. ;) actually i did my first overclocking experements with that Tbird. engredible 1.3 ghz overall. i still have all of these components.

here i took some nostalgic pics, enjoy :D

first the motherboard GA- 7ZX

and the chip thunderbird 1200mhz stepping > axia 0124spaw <

I have a K6 processor and a K6-2. I think I have an older version somewhere around here but have to dig it up.

This is an outstanding idea though. I'd love to do a progression of processors but I doubt I'd put a AMD64 or X2 up on the wall anytime soon. lol

Not unless I won the lotto...

My first build was a K6-2/300mhz, I loved that machine. I was in awe when I first saw Unreal's opening sequence running smoothly  With the exception of the celery (who didn't have one? overclocking champ) I've been on AMD since. :)

I remember when the first Athlon was released. It was glorious. Intel didn't know what hit them, AMD had up til then always played the second fiddle. Suddenly, Intel were beaten at their own game. The Athlon was 30% (sorta) faster on floating point at the same clock speed. The rush for higher clock speeds back then was pretty crazy. :)

XP 1700+ (512MB RAM, GeForce3 Ti200!)

XP 2500+ (1GB RAM, 6800GT)

A64 3200+ (1GB, 7800GT)

x2 3800+ (1GB, 7800GT)

:D

I had the huge IBM 286 "PC", that case was a tank, weighed a ton.

I dont know about these people posting about their 386, 486, K6 etc based amd rigs... To be honest, the K7 was the first cpu to one-up intel. Amd has been around since 1969, and making CPUs since 1975. My first amd rig was a 1988 Zenith powered by an AMD 286 cpu, ive had various amd rigs from then untill now... The K7 was the first one to get excited about. I cant remember exactly how it compared to the P3 intel avalible at the time... but it kicked ass either way.

I remember buying my K7, I think I bought it in 2001 or 2002 (cant remember now). 500Mhz K7, was my main gaiming rig till someone had the hot idea of requiring videocards capable of pixel shading... It did something like 12k in 3dmark01, (Geforce 2 Ultra, 384MB PC100 ram)though again I cant be sure... Im not one for memorizing trivial benchmark specs from nearly a decade ago.

pentium 1 100mhz i think
pentium 3 500mhz
k6/ 600mhz
pentium 3 750mhz
k7/ 800mhz
celery 1.1ghz
pentium 4 1.5 ghz
pentium 4 1.8ghz
xp 3000 @ 2.5ghz
pentium 4 2.4ghz
pentium 4 2.8ghz
z754 2800 @ 2.3ghz
s754 3000 @ 2.5ghz
pentium 4 3.0ghz
s939 3200 @ 2.6ghz
s939 3500 @ 2.8ghz
s939 3700 @ 3.0ghz
s939 opty 144 @ 2.7ghz
LGA 775 pentium D 805 2.66ghz
AM2 x2 4600 @3.1ghz
LGA 775 E6400 @ 3.2ghz

man holy snit thats alot

don't believe that sig it lies

The thing was, to be honest, K6-2s were something to be excited about. You need to remember that although clock-for-clock a P2 was faster than a K6-2, by price, AMD was faster. When I bought my K6-2 350 it was the same price as a (FSB 66mhz) P2-233/266mhz or so. So at equivalent price, AMD smoked the Intel chips.

Upgrade ladder: K6-2 350mhz, Athlon 750mhz t-bird, A-XP 1800+ (I spent a few years drinking and partying there in the middle :D ), s754 A64 2800+, s754 3400+ overclocked.

I never overclocked my chips much unless it was a well-known low-heat chip. Most of my chips were earlier chip designs so not so great overclockers, so I left them at stock. Until the s754 venice 3400+ that is.

I went from a K6233MMX to a few Duron 700mhz that I kept roasting. I had a slot A although I can't remember the specs. Roasted it and bought my previous Dell P4 2.0. Got tired of that last year and put together my current box.

Micron 486 "Magnum" (i486 DX2-66) --> Pentium Overdrive 83 --> Pentium MMX 166 MHz --> Cyrix M2 PR300 --> AMD K6-2 300 --> AMD K6-2 350 --> AMD K6-2 400 --> AMD K6-2 500 --> AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 700 --> AMD Athlon 1.1 GHz --> P4 3.2 GHz LGA775 --> Core2Duo E6700.

There were some other PCs that I built for family and other people as well. Including Athlon 900 MHz, Athlon 1700+, and some others. I feel like I am reliving my teenage youth. Miss that old Pentium Overdrive and great games like Duke Nukem 3D and Need For Speed...MWII and Jedi Knight. Those were the days.

K6-2 300 started it for me. Then K6-2 400 ; K6-2+ 450 @ 550 ; K6-3+ 450 @ 600 ; Athlon T-bird 1ghz ; Athlon XP 2400+ ; Athlon XP 2400 mobile @ 2.4ghz ; Athlon 64 3400+ Clawhammer ; Athlon X2 3800+ ; and my current X2 4600+. Looking for a deal on a FX-60 now. ;)

K6 233 with 3dNow!
K6-2 350
Athlon 800
Athlon 850 (Would OC over the big 1Ghz!!!)
Athlon XP 1800+ (Died a horrible burning death...)
Athlon XP 2200+
Athlon XP 2500+ (This is when I finally got 1 GB of DDR400)
Athlon XP-M 2600+ (Overclocked to 2.5GHz)
Athlon 64 Venice 3000+ (Slower than the XP-M)
Opteron 146 (Wouldn't overclock at all...)

And now, after all those years of AMD... I've got an E6300 and 2 GB of DDR2... I feel kind of ashamed now...

Intel 8088 (Tandy 1000 EX), 486 Cyrix, 75Mhz Pentium, 233Mhz Pentium, 700mhz Athlon, Athlon XP 1800+, Athlon 64 3500+, Athlon 64 X2 4800+

i went AMD the day I started buying my own hardware, before that it was the old mans hand-me-downs. that was also when i passed him up performance-wise, i've had a faster machine ever since... funny because he stuck with Intel... dear god I hope he doesn't get a Conroe or I'm screwed.

in some things, maybe. But the K6-2 had one huge problem: its FPU was slow as dirt. In old games and stuff (that mostly use the ALU) the K6-2 did okay, but bust out any multimedia/encoding/etc. programs that rely on the FPU and the K6-2 is horrendously slow. Plus they were a nightmare of instruction sets: AMD passed them off as i686's, they technically only fulfilled the i586 standard, and then to make it worse they created an awful mess of different versions (k6, k6-2, k6-2+, k6-3, k6-3+). And what was stamped into the heatspreader didn't even necessarily tell you what you had--only by checkout it out in the OS (like a 'cat /proc/cpuinfo') could you really see which instructions it had.

yeah there were somewhat neat little chips (I ran a few of them) but they were so inconsistent it was ridiculous.

You should. :p Dirty man.

I used to have a Pentium III as my main gaming rig. Then I went AMD (this was when the A64 was "the sh-t" and there was no Core2 Duo in sight) and wow was it awesome. It still can keep up from what I have read, even though I don't own the system any more. Even with Conroe on the horizon, I bought an Opteron 170 and couldn't be happier. Sure, the Intels have bigger e-penis measurements, but my games all run in triple digit framerates, so I don't care :p

I went Intel for the laptop because I don't know that AMD laptops were even offered from Dell when I bought. And I'm a college student, whatever is cheaper gets my dollar when it comes to new tech toys now.
