I've recently stumbled upon a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 LGA775 CPU, so i'm planning on buying a cheap little motherboard and using a bunch of other parts I have sitting in the corner of my closet. I do not however know what the CPU's FSB is, its either 533 or 800. So before I go and buy a motherboard, can 1600/800MHz FSB boards run 533MHz CPU's?

The other parts are, if anyones wondering...

450W FSP PSU
1GB DDR2 800 RAM
160GB SATA HDD
ATi Radeon X300

They should. But there are some LGA775 motherboard that don't even support P4 CPUs, despite being perfectly capable of. So make sure that your motherboard actually supports the P4 CPU.
 
How can you tell which mobos do not support P4s? In particular, I'm interested whether ECS GF7050 supports P4 D 805, the ECS website is no help in that regard

There is no P4 D 805. There's a Pentium D 805. And usually the manufacturer's website will tell you whether or not the CPU is supported.
 
The following is a list of all LGA775 Processors that are 2.8GHZ.



Prescott Pentium 4 511 - 533 FSB/1M L2 Cache.
Prescott HT - Pentium 4 HT 520 - 800 FSB/1M L2 Cache
Prescott HT - Pentium 4 HT 520J - 800 FSB/1M L2 Cache
Prescott HT - Pentium 4 HT 521 - 800 FSB/1M L2 Cache
Prescott 2M - Pentium 4 HT 620 - 800 FSB/2M L2 Cache

You should be able to run any of those on a higher rated FSB mobo. If I were you I'd just pick up a cheap ECS from the forums or Newegg, and just check their supported processor list on their website.

Good board, my friend used it in a comp he built for a hotel lobby. Very stable and painless to use. Just don't plan on OC'ing, options are crap.
 
lol, Don't plan to on this rig. Hope the CPU works fine. Now all I need is the case.
