My monitor started to flicker a bit yesterday. It's hard for me to explain, but the flicker.. almost looks like a vibration of everything. It almost looks like the pixels are divided into horizontal rows, and I cant tell what it is because it's going kinda fast, but it's like a fluctuation. As a result it looks almost like a slight vibration.

I checked my monitor by pluging it into my old computer, and there was no sign of this "flicker". That leads me to believe it may be my graphics card. I'm looking for a solution, or a way to figure out if my graphics is the problem, I dont know. I'm not even sure how to explain it properly...

I'd like to note this was my first build, and I just completed it a week ago saturday.

Graphics: evga nvidia 8600gt 512gddr2 (not the best, plan on upgrading it, but heh, I dont currently play any games so I dont have a need for a better one yet aside from the flicker)..

Monitor: 22" samsung 226bw, think it's an A model or something, I dont remember.

(evga nforce 680i sli 122 ck nf68, intel q6600, corsair domintor 2x2 8500 (currently set at 800/4-4-4-12), corsair 650tx psu, antec 900 case..)

I found in my control panel something that may be involved/linked.

"Windows

WD-20080802-1955.dmp
sysdata.xml

"

it says the date this problem occured was 8-2-08, which heh, being more recent, that could fit as to when it started. I'm a little worried about the warning, considering I dont have antivirus protection on this computer yet. I'm not sure what to do about this. in the control panel, it has the option to check for solutions for the problem, I'm going to try clicking it.

edit: when I did, I got this....

Check for NVIDIA Graphics Driver updates

This problem was caused by NVIDIA Graphics Driver, which was created by NVIDIA Corporation. Currently, there is no solution for the problem that you reported.

heh.. seems I know the problem, now, how do I get a solution?

edit: I went to nvidia's website, installed new drivers, restarted, but it didnt fix it.

I have the exact same problem right now with my new 9800 GTX.
I tried updating the driver, and still no help as well.

I think its the video card and it is probably running hot.
First time it happened, I turned my comp off for a few hours and it was fine then it came back.

I put a ton of fans on it to cool it and now its like permanent and it flickers mostly when I play video or play a game. It's worse in the game than video, where in a video just flickers happen while in a game, the entire screen is distorted. All these fans on it doesn't help it.

I am just going to RMA this and just get a 280 GTX for an upgrade.

GPU core, according to hwmonitor, is at 46C. That seems kinda warm to me, considering it's not really doing much but being on.. but heh.

This card was given to me back at christmas, from fry's. I have the reciebt (spelling? lol..), but dont know if they'll do anything for it.

NVIDIA has a support article on how to diagnose this at http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=22. I have had it twice in the last year and a half and neither time was it caused by NVIDIA drivers or my cards. Anything from other software on the system, to faulty memory sectors, to a faulty video card or dirty driver install can cause the driver to crash. I imagine since it if flickering you are using Vista because it can reset the drivers without a reset. In XP you would usually get a blue screen. Follow the instructions in that article and you should get a pretty good idea on what is causing the issue. If you would like to rule the video card out, the fastest way is to try it in another system under a 3D load. If it crashes in 2D and the card is at fault than it will do the same in another system under 3D.

oo thanks. I went through the list and tried to do what I could. I checked all drivers and they're up to date. one thing I couldnt do was use memtest86, I wasnt sure if it would work with my 64bit os (vista home premium 64). It is still here, but I will mention something else I have found.

I have been able to temporaraly get rid of the flicker by turning off the computer for a bit. It always comes back, gradually. It always starts slow, and starts to get a little worse and worse. I dont actually know how bad it will get.

I'm thinking more and more and more that it might be the card. Temps havnt exceeded 46C that I've seen, and the fan is working.

Another time it went away was when I tested my monitor by pluging it into my old computer, and there was no flicker. I pluged it back into my new one, and to my suprise, it wasnt there. The only reason I can think of why is that I unpluged and pluged it back in to my card. (be nice if I had onboard graphics I could try using to see)

I'm ready now to call evga and see what they can do, if anything. Is there anything I missed or something else I should do first?
