I just grabbed a new reference 7970 and installed the 12.8s and have had a few issues although I haven't tested to see if they're driver related yet. Any ideas?

1) About 50% of the time when playing videos on Youtube my primary display will flash and come back showing graphical corruption similar to what you'd see when running an incorrect refresh rate; a squished image and multicolored horizontal lines. This occurs on the primary display even when I have the web browser up on the secondary display.

2) I noticed last night that Afterburner is showing that the card is hanging out at 70* celsius when idling on the desktop.

3) Performance in games is somewhat erratic. I switched from a 6950 to a GTX670 (returned because Skyrim + texture mods + ENB was killing it due to the relatively small amount of VRAM) to the 7970. In Skyrim the 670 actually ran smoother than the 6970 even when it was VRAM limited. e.g. In Whiterun the 670 would run at a steady 34fps until you turned around where it would drop to below 20. The 7970 runs at anywhere from 30-54 fps in town and has random drops to 24fps.

In GW2 it's pretty well known that Nvidia's drivers aren't optimized very well yet but I've found that it ran smoother for me on the 670 for me even though the in-game options screen showed that it was normally running 10 fps-ish lower than the 7970.

2) The reference 7970's run hot and loud, though 70c sounds high for idle. Make sure the fan is unobstructed.

As far as GW2, same as #3. FPS isn't everything. I wouldn't say it's nVidia's drivers so much as ArenaNet's game, though, as to why the performance isn't quite up to par.
 
Welcome to the wonderful world of AMD driver hell. Not sure if that is the problem but I am still running 12.4 drivers on my single 7970. Seems to be the last reliable release especially for single card setups. Might try that version; also turn off hardware acceleration in videos although I don't seem to have a problem with it--many people suggest doing so. Hoping the different driver version might help your problems. My card is running about 65C as I type this. Not bad for the 7970 and mine is an O/C version.
 
Thanks for the input. I'll try the 12.7s and 12.4s tonight. As far as the fan goes; it's not obstructed. I saw a post in the forum from a few days ago with a user stating that his temps were soaring with the 12.8s so hopefully it's just that.

Look here and see how many others are having your issues and also take into account if your using any 3rd party gfxcard tweaking apps.

Post your problem in both places if you have not already done so.
Also kill AB, stop it from starting up on reboot see if the problem persists.

I'm going through the similar thing right now... Getting these random graphical corruptions on the desktop after installing 12.8...
 
How did you update the drivers and are you using any gfx card tweaking SW, fan profile could be messed up and voltage.
And also have you OCed the gfx card.
 
I just used DriverCleaner to uninstall the Nvidia drivers, installed the 12.8, and then installed the CAPs.

I did have the card overclocked but set it back to defaults to see if the issues still occurred (they did). I didn't touch the fan profile so it's at default settings unless AB changes it on it's own. I believe it was hanging out somewhere between 20% and 30% at idle.
 
I've tried a few different drivers now. I used the AMD uninstall tool to remove the current driver before I'd install the older driver.

12.7 - Listed as 12.8 in CCC? Youtube seems to work. 3d clocks don't kick in when starting a game if a video is displayed in the web browser :rolleyes: . Skyrim runs well but has a goofy HUD issue.

12.4 - Listed as 12.6 in CCC? Youtube works. Skyrim works but is unplayable (16-24 fps which puts it on par with my old 6950). GW2 fluctuates between 30 & 55 fps even when there's hardly anything going on.

My temps seem to be ok. The card is actually hanging out around 63C when idling and doesn't go over 82C when under load at 1000Mhz core/1500Mhz mem. That's way higher than the 6950 and 670 but it doesn't really bother me since it seems to be ok and it's not being dumped into the case.

Basically there isn't a driver revision that works for me. It's pretty disheartening since the 6950 (and 670) was rock solid. Has anyone heard of any rumors on 12.9? If it's going to be a while I may just take the card back and wait until the 4GB 670s drop in price or AMD gets their drivers figured out.

Right... you tube, UVD clocks takes priority on AMD cards so if your playing You tube your card will run UVD clocks even if your playing games as well.
That's goes for all AMD cards that support UVD.

You have to turn off Video Hardware Acceleration in flash, start a youtube vid, right click on the vid, settings and untick Enable Hardware Acceleration. And you can watch Vids on the browser without the UVD clocks kicking in.

Also it maybe a good idea to also turn off Hardware Acceleration for the browser as well.

Thanks. I had disabled Hardware Acceleration in FF but hadn't done it for Flash. I found some newer drivers on the Rage3d forum that Final8ty posted so I may give them a try.

Does the 6950 not support UVD? I didn't notice any performance issues with Youtube open while playing games with it.

Yes it does have UVD.

I have Hardware Acceleration in FF off as well, i have Hardware Acceleration in Flash off as i like to run youtube while gaming at times as well, mainly for the music.
 
I installed the Catalyst 12.x drivers from http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33993998 and the 12.8 CAP2 and everything appears to be running reasonably well now. Skyrim is still 10-20 fps slower than the 670 when outdoors but it's still pretty smooth and it's quite a bit smoother in town. I'm not sure if GPUz is trustworthy but it indicated 2700MB of VRAM usage at one point during my play time. GW2 is now running around 45fps with supersampling enabled and 75 when set to native which is acceptable to me.

Youtube seems to be working fine now without corruption so hopefully it's all good.
