Hi guys totally new to this forum and I want to embark on a new build.....So
After slugging it out for 3 years with my old socket A Computer i feel it is time for a fresh start i have been keeping up with the new tech and i must say the core 2 offerings look amazin but for reasons only a pyshcyatrist would understand i want to go with AMD
So let me have it>>>>Specifications:
Asus R.O.G crosshair nforce 590Sli Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64X2 6400 Black edition (gonna wait till phenom preformance improves)
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2x1024 PC2-6400 (Will PC2-8500 work with the Motherboard)
Corsair 620w HX Modular PSU
320GB Western Digital 7200Rpm 16MB
Samsung DVD-RW 20x
Scythe ninja CPU Cooler
BFG 512MB 9600GT OC graphics card

I live in the UK, I intend to experiment somewhat with OC'in And my main use for the PC would Be Gaming and schoolwork and storing music

So any Advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated:)

May I ask why you are going with an AMD build? Seriously, a Intel build for around the same price would perform much better, both at stock speeds and overclocked.

PC2-8500 (aka DDR2 1066) will work with your set up, but unless you're a heavy overclocker, PC2-6400 (or DDR2 800) may be all that you need.

Where were you planning on buying everything from? (There are some links available in the Gen[H]ard FAQ... but it wouldn't hurt to add a few more there....)

Looks fine if you stick with AMD. Though, I'd probably go for a cheaper board (nF570 if you don't need SLI). What size monitor do you have?

nforce 570 boards do support sli I have a 19" monitor I went with AMD because decent intel boards are more expensive and i only have £600 to spend and because im in the uk im buying from scan, novatech and dabs

Well what features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? High overclocking ability? etc. There are plenty of decent Intel motherboards for around $100 US Dollars.

Right, nF570 SLI supports SLI, and nF570 Ultra does not. There is no nF590 Ultra, so the part about not needing SLI implies nF570 Ultra, since its cheaper. Though, even the 570 SLI boards are cheaper than the 590 SLI boards, so even those would achieve the lower price goal. I agree with tiraides, you don't need SLI, so don't pay extra for it unless the board has all the OTHER features you NEED.

If you'd like, someone can probably throw together an intel build for you, just answer Danny's questions.

I dont want to be lazy and let someone else build a pc for me, i wouldnt need raid because at most id only ever have two 320GB or two 250GB HDD, I kow RAID 0 would speed transfer rates and other things, fire wire could be useful overclocking ability would be good but the 6400 would achieve only a few hundred more megahurtz at best so should i degrade the CPU and get a good OC board or keep the CPU and get a deccent gaming board?
>>>(would the phenom work with the crosshair out of the box?)<<<<
I would wait untill the phenom develops a bit more before getting one

Let me rephrase that... If you'd like more performance for your money, someone could suggest an Intel alternative mobo/cpu for you.

Since you don't need SLI/Corssfire, just get a board that fits your needs instead of some overpriced beast with a bunch of features you'll never use.

If you go with an Intel build, an E8400 or Q6600 and Asus P5K-E would outperform your AMD board/cpu (without the option of SLI/Crossfire, of course) at stock speeds. It would be slightly cheaper, too, unless you want to OC. If you OC, pickup a good CPU HSF and it will most likely OC to around 4Ghz with the E8400 or 3.4Ghz with the Q6600.

$140 - Asus P5K-E
$210 - Intel Core2Duo E8400 3.0Ghz or $190 - Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz
$50 - ZEROtherm Nirvana ($10 MIR)
=======
$400 or less if you go with the quadcore

$165 - AMD 6400+
$230 - Asus Crosshair
=======
$395

Sorry, I don't know about Phenom working with the Crosshair out of the box. I'd imagine you'd need a BIOS update.

so i sholud definetly go with intel then oknew spec here goes:
Asus P5K-E
Intel core 2 Quad Q6600
Crucial ballisitx tracer PC2 6400
BFG OC 9600GT 512MB
Corsair 550w PSU
250GB Western digital HDD
Samsung DVD-RW 20x
Asus silent square? >>(Or ahould i just stick with the zerotherm??)<<

If you could find it, stick with the Zerotherm Nirvana.

Also, try to find cheaper (brand-name) RAM; you don't need anything more than CL5 DDR2 800 RAM to push the Q6600 to a good overclock.

But 2GB G.Skills are only £30 at overclockers.co.uk. And 4GB G.Skills are only £50. Spending £10 on nothing but pure looks is all up to you. Personally, I'd spend the extra cash on 4GB instead of pretty LEDs. ;) Again, if you like the LEDs, go for the Tracers. If you want more for your money, get 4GB.

All you need is the 9600GT. It'll be just fine for your 19" monitor. Though ff you have the cash to burn though, go for the 9800GTX.

Should I get the 9600GT or the 9800GTX??

Dude make your mind up - do you now have more to spend or something? You can't really fit a 9800GTX into a £600 budget.

Since you have a 19 inch monitor, get the 9600GT. There's no need for the 9800GTX or SLI.

Well if there is a deal on the 9800GTX, it may be worth it, but I doubt there is such a deal in the price range of the 9600GT.

the 9800GTX is less than £200 in the uk last time i checked but i will heed your advice and get te 9600GT >>(One final question)<< will there be any incompatibilty issues due to the PCI-E 1.0 On the P5K-E
with the 9600GT 2.0 connector PCI-E?

Well what resolution is that 19" monitor?

And no you will not have any problems using a PCI-E 2.0 card in a PCI-E 1.0 or 1.1 slot. It's all compatible.

Hang on a second ive just looked at the P5K-E Board and it is a crossfire board s0 would pairing it with a HD3870 preform better than a 9600GT

No. The 9600GT will still be faster than the HD3870 and cost much less. Pairing an Nvidia card with a Nvidia chipset or ATI card with an Intel Chipset or ATI with an AMD chipset will not yield any performance advantage. So stick with the 9600GT and P5K-E.

The 9600GT should be able to handle Crysis on at least medium settings at that resolution. Dunno about high settings. However, you should get high settings in other games.

cool thanks for your advice guys! Following your advice i shall embark on this build as soon as time allows thanks again tiaides, danny bui and enginurd
