Hey, i realized that this question has probably been asked thousands of times but im not quite sure which card would be better for HL2 and DOOM III. I bought the 5950 Ultra and after i installed it, i saw that the text on everything looked kind of blurry so i tested it in another computer and it still looked blurry so i sent it back and now i have a sealed one so im just thinking about selling it and getting a 9800XT. Any suggestions?

5950 Ultra for Doom III
ati cards have a fit with doom III
HL2 i donno i don't care
either way you might have had the bitmaps set to high profromance instead of visaul quality that could have been your prob
but imo i say go with the 5950
i have had to MANY probs with ATI cards in the past to get back to using them

Just read any review out there. Check out the ones on www.hardocp.com and make up you own mind. Don't take information 2nd hand out of forum posters here at [H], too many fanbois to keep track of.

Hi, I own both cards, and I would have to go with the FX 5950, Sorry :(. I'm a Radeon fan but, still Nvidia is number one.

Haven't seen any reviews where the 5950 Ultra was recommended over a 9800 XT. I'd say get the 9800XT.

I'd recommend this card
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-340&catalog=48&depa=0

It's basically a 9800 XT, but with a 9800 Pro flashed BIOS. However, if you look closely at the PCB of that card and a regular 9800 XT, they are exactly the same. People seem to have gotten the same clockspeeds out of them as a regular 9800 XT.

If you have to spend that kinda money go with the XT. Of the two its the most futureproof. (Obviously waiting for next gen would be best).

I just can't recommend nVidia for high end these days, their hardware isn't where ATIs is and their driver support isn't any better than ATIs is currently.

Check out all the reviews though, and see what the general opinion of this forum is. I think the current trend is towards ATI, which is why some people will call this an ATI fanboy forum, but I think that's the wrong interpretation of why ATI is popular right now on this forum.

I did a lot of research and ended up picking a 9800 pro 256mb model. The new model at newegg with the shiny shroud over the heat sink is just an XT with a different bios. You can flash it to XT speeds. I had no particular preference prior, the most recent video card I had before the 9800 pro is the GeForce 2 Go in my laptop, which considering its a mobile video card, I've been happy with.

Neither. Both are a waste of money.

Get a 9800Pro if you have to buy a video card right now. But as mentioned above, newer cards are coming out soon. Even if you wind up getting a 9800 Pro, waiting will result in a lower price.

winner. the 9800XT is a pretty poor value, so unless you've got money to burn i'd go for a 9800 pro.

There have been a number of cards that cost $500. Saying that the 9800XT and the 5950 Ultra are the most expensive, when there have been $500 cards before is wrong.

The Obsidian2 X-24 was $600 when it was on the retail shelves.

9800XT has better quality than the 5950, such as, the AA and AF look a hell of a lot better than the 5950, and it will still give you faster rates in things like 3dmark and other DirectX 9 applications.

go with the 9800XT

Oh yeah thats right, cuz the final release for Doom III is already out and poeple have experienced it.

nvidia has created functions on their new cards specifically for doom III and id has announced that they are specifically sponsoring nvidia cards for the game. It's pretty clear that nvidia cards will be better with it.

Ok I am gonna say it:

HL2 is NOT out... Doom 3 is NOT out... Therefore, asking which card would be better for which game is an unanswerable question. Think about it.

I would have too agree that the 9800XT and 5950 are probably not your best choice. Just go with a 5900 or 9800 pro and overclock a bit. I don't think the temp probe on the XT is worth the extra money.

If your looking for a HL2/D3 card, just wait for the benchies when the games finally come out.

Wait for the next gen cards to come out then buy the 9800 pro/XT. If I recall the FX has some pixel shader problems...I've got nothing to back that up and I'm sure I will flamed but I'd still would go with ATi.

There have been numerous threads about this in the forums. The short part: it's true. The long part: go find those threads and read why. :)

Neither.

5900 non-ultra, and OC it to a 5950.

Then when it fries after a day send it back to GameVE.com so they can send some poor sap a bum card. GREAT IDEA! :p

Yep. That is why I chose a 9800 Pro over a 9800XT. The 9800XT is usually 7-8% faster for alsmost twice the price...

If you ever plan on using Linux with 3D accelerated graphics, stay away from ATI! The drivers are hard to install, usually requiring you to recompile your kernel. When the drivers do work, the performance is a lot less than in a windows machine. NVidia's linux drivers are easy to install, and work perfect- sometimes better than in Windows. I wish I had the $$$ to blow on a 5950...

9800xt hands down winner here. But as mentioned I would go with the 9800 pro for around 200$
