Will I see any difference going from a ATI 9800XT to the new ATI X700?

Thanks for any info.

Is the difference between the X800SE and my old 9800XT big or small?

My company is letting me pick a video card and I told them I would like a new ATI X800 card but the Ultra is too much.

I am giving my old 9800XT to my boss.

Actually, the x700 pro is better than the 9800xt. So if its the x700pro then it's a better investment.

so is any X700 better than a 9800XT? I know it is not the latest & greatest but I just need to know if it is a bit better?

Let me put it this way...

If someone gave you a choice between the 9800XT or X700 for free, which would you take?

the X700 is about as fast as the 9800XT
the X700 is a BIT faster but not worth the upgrade

x700 is about as fast as the 9800XT that gets about 5400 3dmark03, the x700 pro gets about 7200 3dmark03 and the x700xt gets about 8300.

A vanilla X700 is far inferior to a 9800XT (an inferior fillrate as well as a considerably inferior memory bandwith).

Here's a comparison:
..............................fill rate.......................Mem. Bandwith
X700.......................3.2 Gp/s....................9.6 GB/s
9800XT...................3.296 Gp/s.................23.4 GB/s

9800XT is superior in both fill rate and mem. bandwith. therefore: 9800XT>X700

The X700XT, however, is a totally different story as not only has the difference between memory bandwith been reduced but the fillrate of the X700XT is also way higher than the 9800XT.

Don't forget tho that the 9800XT can be O'ced way more than an X700 card.

dont upgrade ur 9800xt to an x700... it'll be a downgrade in most part.. but to a x700xt it's a great choice...

Well, I can tell you from personal experience.

I had a 9800xt (Actually, a 9800 pro that with the same core that I modded into an Xt w/ 128 mb RAM). It died. I needed a new card and wasn't going to spend 400 dollars. I was going to get an x700, however, it is ONLY a PCI-E card, along with the x300 and x600. Cheapest thing you can get from ATI for AGP is the x800 pro (or SE when it comes out), and the pro is around 400 dollars.

So, no, it's not a good upgrade... because if you have an AGP board, you can't do it.

However... if you're not biased, go for a 6800 nu (I got a BFG for 250 bucks). Most of the BFG cards card have the extra pipes unlocked, and honestly, this card has doubled my benchmark scores. It also overclocks well.

If you're stuck with ATI... well, your choices are limited now.

Hope this helps!

You can get x800 pro's for 329.99 on www.outpost.com

Yea, but Fry's is cheating! :p It will all depend on how much you can spend...

So, carloswill, how much can you spend?

Also, I searched Outpost and couldn't find an x700's.

I was joking about them cheating :p . I just meant that they have unnormally low prices, so they've got to be doing something weird :p.

When you get your first job you'll understand this. The card belongs to the company he works for, not his personal posession.

To the OP, what kind of place do you work where PC's need 9800XT video cards. I am curious, cause I want a job there too. We have managed workstations here with integrated Intel crap. Hell, even scrolling a webpage can be a stuttering slideshow :)

If the 6800 non ultra cards are in your price range, I would get one of them. Great cards for the money and it will be a large upgrade over what you have now.
