17-year-old son's gaming rig... see specs in sig. Monitor is a 22" LG HDTV @ 1680x1050. No plans to upgrade anything in the near term. I haven't been keeping up with video tech since builiding this rig several years ago. What's a good replacement card for the 9800GTX? Will probably pick one up at the local MicroCenter.

In terms of approxamate pricing equiv at 9800GTX launch, I'd say the GTX560Ti for nVidia, or the HD6950 1GB variant for AMD.

neither of those would be worth the money with a dual core cpu at 1680x1050. a gtx460 can be had for over 100 bucks cheaper and give the same playable performance in nearly every case.

ah, I'm sorry :(

There are hundreds of good cards. What are your objectives and budget?

Some options include those cards mentioned above:

GTX 460 768MB - $130 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390

The above card are being phased out and replaced by the new card GTX 550 Ti - but in the short term the newer card will cost more while you may find savings on the above card. One EVGA card was on sale for only $110 at newegg just the other day.

GTX 460 1 GB - $180 AR

Here is a link showing comparative performance of the two above with the 9800 GTX. I would prefer the less expensive card above as performance is not that much different than the latter:

But like I said there are hundreds of options. What is your budget and objectives? Something less expensive? Better performance? Particular games and settings?

You can find help in identifying system requirements and limits for upgrading your video card and personal preferences at:

Sorry guys, been awhile since I've engaged on the forums and forgot the protocol...

Budget... not an issue, just want value for my investment.

Objectives... get a card that will perform at least as well as what he had. If it will provide an upgrade given the 1680x1050 limit, so much the better.

My son plays the latest versions of the military-style FPSes, plus WoW (although I cannot for the life of me figure out the appeal of that game!) Settings... he goes for the highest quality that doesn't slow down the fps noticably (don't we all?). So I guess we're looking for a card that can max out the quality on a 1680x1050 screen.

i have replaced my 9800gtx+ with the GTX460 1gb and it does anything and everything you need at 1680x1050. Your son will be a happy camper going max on just about everything. 4xAA 16xAF etc etc.
