I was wondering how everyones overclocks on their 9800 pros went, specifically r350 cores with 128mb ram.

Thanks in advance.

core: 421.2mhz
memory: 351mhz (702ddr)

This o/c works for everything cept DoomIII. I start to get white and red snow (NEVER saw red snow be4) after 5 minutes of playing DoomIII. I run that game at stock clocks.

I have my 9800pro @ 420/720 stable in everything sept doom3 also. I get red and white snow :(, o well runs fine @ stock. That oc is w/ a vantec iceberg 4 and vantec ramsinksw/cheap thermal tape.

my 9800pro is an r350 and atitool finds errors at 412mhz (XT speed) but i cannot see any with my eyes so i leave it at 412mhz. i have a ddr2 version.

Does anyone know the speeds that make it equal to an XT?

Thanks in advance, and thanks for the responses guys.

ati tool hits around 395/365, I drop it down to 390/360 on the ATI stock 128 mb version, the core is an R350, but with the newer hynix ram.

i heard somewhere that r350 cores are actually better for overclocking but you have to push alot of volts thru them, im not about to voltmod my card to find out tho.

Anybody else have some results?

What's the best way to find my max overclock? Atitool?

I usually have mine at 426/353 (706). Haven't tried Doom 3 yet, but probably it won't like it :p

Running mine at 420/350 stable in Doom3. I removed the shim & have an Iceberq on there. My next move will be to put on the Tweakmonster BGA RAM sinks, but I don't think I can stop playing the game long enough to let the Arctic Silver epoxy cure ;)

With these speeds on Multibeast (link below), FRAPS never drops below 30fps (usually sits around 60fps) at 10 X 7 in high quality mode.

Thats what I like to hear.

I softmoded a Powercolor 9800 SE to a 9800 PRO and it’s working beautifully. I can O/C to 410 core/360 mem before it starts to “snow”. Doom3 allows for no overclocking so I run it at stock PRO speeds (380 core/340 mem). Other games are unaffected by the overclock.

Currently running D3 (except I'm at freakin' work now) at 1027x768 high quality rock solid.

I'm abso-smurfly positive it's not a 9800XT, if that's what yer askin', acascianelli

If, however, ATi made 9800pro's with R360 cores in them, then according to your logic, it very well could be. I can take off the Iceberq tonite & have a look-see if this indeed is a possibility...

BTW, this is a "built by ATi" retail boxed 9800pro.

I have a Hercules Prophet 9800 pro 128mb. If you are not familiar with the card, it comes factory with upgraded copper GPU cooling on the front and back of the card as well as copper ramsinks. I added a PCI slot fan two slots down to suck out some of "stale" air that gets trapped below the card, it really made a big difference!

I am able to get it stable @ 420/367(734) in all games (including Doom 3) with no artifacting even after extended playing.

Not too bad for a $182 card that I got new from Overstock.com :D

Okay, so an R360 will overclock better? I have a 128MB 9800Pro, pretty sure it's an R360. I'm trying max OCs right now, I'll post the results here.

r360 cores are better overclockers.
9800XT's run off of r360 cores.
9800Pro's come with both r350 and r360 cores.
only 9800Pro's with r360 cores are able to mod to 9800XT

Yep, I know that R360=9800XT. Just wasn't sure whether they would OC better, but of course.. 412/730 should be the magic figure.

Just the thread i was looking for. I'm planning on getting a 9800 pro 256... question is, is there any way I can ensure a r360 core?

Also, would a VGA silencer running in silent mode be sufficient cooling for this OC? IF not, what's better. Keeping it affordable.

I have a 9800Pro 128MB w/r360 @446/389. I have the VGA Silencer & some ramsinks.

420mhz from an r350 core? you sure thats not a r360?

i got 430 out of a stock cooled r350 in my shuttle! the ram goes up to like 720, but im sure it goes higher, i just didnt care enough to, i got a 6800

spend like 20 bucks more and get a 6800.....

i got the leadtek non ultra. great card

mine is an R350 @ 412/365. Not a massive OC, but I guess I am an odd case in that it works fine in Doom3. (4.7 Cats)

Anyone know how these two cards compare (if I were to flash to xt)? I've heard a decent amount on the GT and the Ultra but not much on the regular card.

What's the performance gain between 128mb 9800 pro and 256mb if either were an r360 flashed to xt.

A 6800 GT or regular will knock the socks off of a Pro or XT. It doesn't matter which.

I have a 9800 Pro flashed to XT, then back to Pro. The Xt BIOS overclocked to the same, but it began to give me errors in BFV that were not evident with the Pro. I did have an R360 core, I checked when I installed my VGA Silencer. There is a good BIOS for 128 MB pros that you want to flash to XT. Since most 128 MB Pros with a 360 Core have Hynix ram, you should find that one. There is a bios specifically for that, just google 9800 XT Hynix Bios.

By the way, my 9800 Pro Overclocks to Daily stability (10/12 hours solid gaming uptime) 441/388.8 (777.6 actual), and it can go more when I feed it more voltage.

I bought this HSF on Ebay for .99 (9.99 shipped), It is a Socket A heatsync with a nice copper base. I chose this one because it has a small footprint, which is an almost perfect fit for the 9800Pro GPU.

My highest OC on the core with the stock puny ATI HSF was 402 With this monster I can OC to 441 with no artifacting at all! RAM is maxed out at 371. I gained about 900 points in 3dmark 2001se.

It does take up 2 PCI slots though... but I only have an Audigy in the case anyway.

Runs stable in Doom3 at 1280x1024 High Detail No AA

425/770 msi radeon pro 128mb 256-bit detects as a XT and has r360 core... no bios update though... maybe get better results but im a n00b at that kinda stuff so i am going to leave it... enemy territory looks great and thats all i play right now

Got a BBA 9800pro (R360 core) flashed to XT Bios, I can usually get about 440/380 (760) max but i leave it at default 411/365 (730) I actually had to underclock the core to 389 for Doom 3 otherwise it snowed a little, still runs perfect on full details though :)

395/701 before installing VGA Silencer. Now with VGA silencer 425/720, I got a 30MHz increase on the core from installing it, needless to say I was EXTREMELY happy. Mine is also an R350.

Except..... it's not a GT.

I only got a 1.5MHz overclock on the core :( (see sig). I still notice snow sometimes, and that's with a VGA Silencer and AS5. I think the lesson to be learnt for me is don't by stuff from Norweigen companies priced £200 too cheap around Xmas time .

somethings wrong there, you should post a question in the video cards or overclocking forum about that. you should be able to get more than 1.5mhz extra.

It's very hot in my bedroom right now and the airflow to my case isn't the best (computer desks aren't really such a great invention ;)) although ATITool reports my maximum being about 400, although that was in the winter when I ran it. The overclock doesn't really bother me, as long as everything works at at least stock - I don't game that often anymore anyway and I payed £130 for the card when it cost around £300 because of a pricing error so I'm happy ;). The few extra FPS I'd get with a higher overclock doesn't bother me too much so I'm not really losing out on anything.

There is a bit of misinformation in this thread.

The R360 is just a revision of the R350 that utilizes a better shader implementation. It runs at 412MHz on the XT, but bear in mind the XT runs the GPU @ 1.8v instead of 1.7v on the Pro.

The R350 is found only on earlier Pro boards. Most of the recent (read: last 2 months) 9800 Pros use the R360 core. I bought one from NewEgg in May that was a R360, however I broke it :( My replacement from Best Buy was a R350. So if you want the R360 on the 9800 Pro, buy a BBA 9800 Pro or a Sapphire 9800 Pro from NewEgg, it's most likely going to have an R360.

There isn't much of an overclocking difference between the R350 and the R360. I have seen good OCs on both, it's all about cooling. Also, if you snag a 9800 Pro that is built on the XT PCB (these are being made as well) then you will get Overdrive, the thermal sensor, and 1.8v to the GPU. That makes for a very solid 9800 Pro

And memory overclocks are very hit or miss. My R360 cored 9800 Pro, on the Pro PCB, would only hit 360MHz on the memory, which were Hynix 2.8ns chips. My current vanilla Pro (R350/Pro PCB) board can run the memory at 400MHz, which is also Hynix 2.8ns chips. They have OCZ copper RAM sinks but thats not going to account for a 40MHz increase in clock speed.

hmm, maybe i should do that volt mod to my card to get it to 1.8v :D

1.7v on the Pro.

Is that 100% correct? I think mine's set at 1.5V in the BIOS. People told me not to touch that because it has it's own power source when I used to be a regular on the boards (months ago). Maybe that's why my overclock is so poor, either that or something to do with my powersupply, I've always suspected it, the 12.8V on the 12V rail has always been a bit suspicious.
