9800 pro 128 or 256

Okay, first off you can flame the ***** outa me as long as you can answer my question : )

First, will I need a 256 9800 pro for doom3 and HL2 or a 128? I never knew the difference and if I will need it. Id rather get a 128 as they are cheaper, but If I need a 256.

Second, exuse my utter noobiness, I have never understood the difference between a Hard drive and a memory card. Yes, its true. And what does memory on a graphics card do?

if you think you need 256MB, which doom III will run better on, then 9800pro isnt what you should look at...a 256MB Radeon 9800 XT will run you 300 dollars or more. in that case, wait a while to pick up a GF6800 GT for about 350. Otherwise get a Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB for about 120 on ebay.

the memory on the graphics card stores texture information and bunch of other info. Memory is on the order of 100 times faster than hard drives. Hard drives are cheaper than memory per GB. ( 200 dollars per GB for memory and 50 cents for hard drive)
 
Thanks for your opinion, Does the nvidia card you mention contain direct x9.0? Because I also want full HL2 performance.
 
All NVIDIA and ATI cards of the current generation are of course dx9 compatible.
 
In a way I prefer ATI, but if nvidias new card is cheaper and yet quality wise it can stand up to 9800 pro/xt, then I would consider buying, input on which is better deal?
