would this be worthwhile to pick up for folding? they are on sale for $59 and I have an open slot on my server...

yeah they work pretty good for now.. not totally future proof with the GPU3 client being forced on us here in the next 3-4 months.. but should do 4-5k PPD stock and 4-6k overclocked.. if your server has decent cooling you should be able to get the shaders up to 1836.. the rest you can leave stock clocks if you want since they dont have a huge impact on PPD for the amount of heat increase.. just make sure they arent the green edition cards and you should be good to go..

Any higher and it started showing artifacts in furmark.

oh yeah in furmark they wont do over 1650.. but in F@H you can get pretty damn high before it starts throwing errors.. my 8800GT with the 1.1v mod would artifact at 1785 in furmark.. play games at 1836 and fold at 1890..

Gpu3 will be forced on us? I wonder if my 260-216 will even swallow those. maybe I should splurge on the 460 on sale for $189 - grrr sold out already! Do you know if there'll be anything to fold on older GPU's if/when GPU3 is forced out?

newegg has several 460's for 199$ with free shipping..

yes GPU2 is being phased out on the nvidia side but most likely not til the ATI gpu3 client is released.. theres no actual date set but when it was originally announced they were looking at about 3 or so months before the gpu2 client would be phased out.. the GTX 260 will do fine.. wont be anywhere near the PPD numbers you see on the gpu2 client but when i was running it on mine i avged about 7200 PPD(8000-8900 on the gpu2 client) but that was back when they only had 2 WU's for it.. not sure what they have now..

also if you use EMCYVNV39 you get 10% off select fermi cards til 8/03 (they claim the codes unique to the email address but i doubt it so feel free to use it if you want) if you have a newegg account check your email from july 27th..

I had planned on upgrading to some 260's, guess I'll save my sheckles and just jump to the 460 series.

OK, good news but my guess would be the 9800GT and the GTS250 in my rig#3 will probably be next to useless by then. Will be hard to come up with the dough for a new 460 tho, got my teens in sports and there's a bunch of fees coming up soon, not to mention the NFL season and all the football pools I can eat:rolleyes:

for now id wait and see what happens with the gpu3 client and what WU's they add to it then see if the gtx 260's worth it..

Plus waiting will hopefully drop the price some.. :)

that 10% code is the same one in my email link too, it only works on certain cards. The only 460 it covers is the Palit 1gb card which comes to 206.99 with free shipping.

For comparisons: I got about 7k on my 260 core 216.. I get about 12-13k now on my GTX470..

Chill out, chill out.
I'm not one to stick up for PG (cough EUE problems cough), but they're not forcing gpu3 on anyone. I'm sure gpu2 will continue running core11 WUs just like gpu3 can run core11 or core15 WUs depending on which card and which flags you run.
gpu3 is still in early stages, it will get better. Look at all the other things, the way they've gone....things will get better. Give it time. More WUs will come, they will up bonuses. G92 and 200 series cards will get better PPD on core15 than they do now at some point, it's bound to happen.

Yes Toco the 2 series can swallow gpu3, core11 and core15 WUs. Yes, core15 WUs have less PPD than core11 WUs, but there are also some incentives, like lower temps, better stability and a client that autoconfigures itself (for the most part). No more -forcegpu nvidia_g80 flag. ;)

I've had no surprising issues since switching to 258.96 and gpu3 on 2 machines with 1 8800GT and 2 260 216's. I do run with -advmethods so all 3 clients pull core11 WUs and I don't have to deal with the PPD drop of running the core15 WUs. I was hoping I would stop having the EUE issues but there's no doubt in my mind that I'm just a magnet for troublesome WUs. :D

NCIX. eVGA 9800GT for $89.99 CDN with $30.00 CDN M.I.R. picked up one today ;)

My BFG Tech 9800GT does some good work folding, just make sure to close F@H before starting any games... it tends to crash for me.

I saw in the Hot Deals forum that BB has the PNY 9800GTX (aka GTS 250) on clearance for $77..

On a side note, it's odd to see the 9800GTs doing such low numbers..I average over 5KPPD with my shaders stock on my 8800GT, and close to 6K with shaders @ 1854..

According to HFM? Really? It's possible I have a low power 9800gt. not sure what the shader clocks are......

Depending on the WU, mine is anywhere from 3600 ppd on a p6600 to 5170 ppd on a p5768

All depends on the wu

I think the shader steps increase like this: 1512, 1566, 1620,1674, 1728, 1782, 1836, 1890.

Most of the WUs I fold with my 8800s are averaging over 5000 PPD and some get as much as 6250 PPD. If I don't use a high OC, I can see performance a bit under 5000 PPD with the 450-pt WUs.

Really Jebo? Is this your mowing technique? you almost drew blood you mowed over me so fast the other day :0

stock clocks on the 9800GT is 625/1500(1512)/900.. the low powered version is 550/1465/800 i believe.. something along those lines..

stock clocks on this new eVGA are 550/1375/900. I've cranked the shaders to 1620 as a trial but have been waiting for a work packet for over an hour ...

Lol. Thankfully I have a couple cpus to fall back on

OK, installed last night along with FAH-gpu as a service and latest drivers, etc. getting 4500 ppd on current work unit but now my smp crashes on this PC. Was folding fine for a week or so since I switched over from the CPU clients to the smp. Logs indicate "shutdown unstable machine". Puzzling as this PC is running @ stock with no overclocks except the shaders on the GPU and only have -smp -verbosity 9 flags set. Running Win Home Server with 2GB RAM on AMD64 X2 6400+ CPU. The smp was getting less ppd than the GPU client is but shouldn't I be able to get better ppd running both? I'd rather not go back to the CPU clients and miss out on bonus points if possible:confused:

Sounds like your memory might have some issues. Reduce the memory multiplier and see what that does.

Good call, but it wasn't the multiplier. For some reason the memory timings were all reset to auto and were actually 4/4/4/12/16 which is almost identical to the top EPP in SPD for PC8500 or PC6400 at 2.2V. I manually set them to JEDEC spec of 5/5/5/18/23 and it's running PC6400 @ 1.85V and not crashing now. Don't need tight timings on a Server and I'm not sure how it reset itself. Must've been a unnoticed crash and reboot sequence that got by me. Too many long hard days at work the last coupla weeks, thanks for the refresher.

/sounds of forehead bonking off desk

That is a low power "green " 9800gt you have there, cranking the shaders to what you have now should net 4.5-5k PPD depending on WU

You're right, getting 4.1K ppd on P6600 right now. Still having problems keeping the smp client going tho. Uninstalled and deleted all the 6.29 stuff and went with the new 6.30 as a service but still crashes with UNSTABLE MACHINE. Was folding smp units fine until I stuck in the 9800GT. Everything else is stable. Am now wondering if the SilverStone 400W power supply is insufficient or if this old AsRock mobo is getting flaky. Have 3 SATA drives and an IDE optical drive in this Server along with the 9800GT new addition. These old 6400+ CPU's are 125W babies so maybe I should try a beefier PSU. Will have to wait for awhile if so.

2nd thoughts: only the smp process crashes, not the PC so 400W PSU is probably not the problem...
