9800 GT Died Last Night

Last night my 9800 GT died, so I'm now in the market for a replacement. I had a 465 GTX and a 9800 GT running in SLI, but thankfully it was the lesser card that bit the dust. Money is pretty tight right now, so I'm trying to get a cheap replacement. I was looking for another 9800 GT, but there don't seem to be many around, and I could probably get a far better card for same price these days. Can anyone shoot some suggestions my way for a good value card?

Looking for something around $150. I play a lot of PC games, but my 465 GTX handles those fine for me right now (I don't need to run everything at ultra settings). My 9800 GT had my secondary display plugged into it and I believe was the physx processor in my nVidia control panel settings.

I was looking at this card, what are your thoughts: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Superclo...ref=sr_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1336492972&sr=1-9

If your 465 runs games just fine, why buy another card? Presumably you can plug your secondary monitor into the 465 as well? And if you don't need ultra settings in games you could probably survive without PhysX as well?

I'd save the cash and get a better card once you buy a game that your 465 wont run, since you seem to be very good at making your hardware last :)

Just my 2 cents.

30% increase in speed/performance is a bit more than incremental, i would call 30% substantial!

I think 30% is an awful lot. The 465 has more cores but is slower clocked. Abit of OC and I'd say the 465 could easily outpace the 560.

OP have you tried unlocking your 465 to a 470? That would give you quite a boost aswell.

I see a used 465 on ebay for $100 if the OP wants to gamble on keeping that SLI setup.

For the money, I think a used 465 is the best choice. It will give a nice performane boost for the price.

o_O I assume that was with hacked drivers? How did it work out?

Yah I was wondering about that. I was guessing he didn't really mean SLI, just 2 cards, 2 screens, one for gaming.

This. Sorry for mix up, didn't realize what SLI truly meant! One monitor plugged into each card.

I have two monitors and sometimes when I'm playing games it will lag if both are plugged into the single card. Not often, but enough to be of annoyance.

I clean the machine regularly for dust and all. That 9800GT lasted almost three years, which from what I read last night is much higher than the average life span of the card!

I found a reputed dealer selling the 465GTX new for $139, so I went with that. Dual 465 GTX cards should last me quite a while :). I've never played around with overclocking, but once games start coming out that my two cards can't handle I'll definitely look into it.

Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated!

I think most of the 9800GT cards died by now, they had manuf issues.

I'm still running a galaxy 9800gt low power version, bought a little over 2 years ago.

Will be replacing it soon with a 7850.

So I take it there is no warranty on this 9800 GT? I only ask because some people forget they have lifetime warranties, etc. What brand is it and was it originally purchased by you?

meh, what a waste of money. Using the second video card to power extra monitors requires a $30 video card max.

I was unaware it had a lifetime warranty. I did buy it, but it was with cash at best buy or frys approx. 3 years ago. I don't have anything (receipts, box, etc.).

Regardless, now I'm pretty excited about running two 465 GTXs...money is tight, but not tight enough that I want to go back to a 9800GT again :D. Thanks for the heads up though, appreciate it!

Ack, sorry, guess my post was unclear. I meant to say SOME have lifetime warranties. EVGA cards with an -AR at the end of the model number do. You linked to an EVGA card so I wondered if your 9800 GT was an EVGA registered -AR version. IF it is, check EVGA's website to see if you registered and forgot. They keep that info forever, and hey.... even if you dont want to stick another 9800 GT in your system, you never know what they will send you. People have gotten better cards than they sent in before because they didn't have that model left.

Lifetime warranty often doesn't mean what you think it means. Discontinued products are often deemed past their lifetime, ie out of warranty.

Uh, no. generally its the lifetime of the company. I've sent back several XFX, EVGA and BFG (rest their soul) lifetime card way after they no longer made the card. I usually got a one generation newer card.

Until I saw what the OP got, I would have thought maybe a GTS 450 would be a good PhysX card, but dual 465s (assuming his PSU can handle it) should perform very well.
