Do y'all see this as staying an apple-only feature for the near-term, or do you think we'll see other phones with this resolution (or similar) emerging later this year?
Absolutely. The screen on the iPhone is only $28. It's just a matter of time before other manufacturers pick up a similar if not higher resolution display.
Certainly includes labor costs.wow thats it?
someone i know cracked his screen and it was 200$ to replace
You may see higher rez screens than what is currently used, but I don't think you'll see 960x640. 3:2 is a lame aspect ratio for something that pretends to be a media device. I'll take a lower DPI 16:9 screen instead.
I get that the retina display is high dpi, but who actually reads websites fully zoomed out?
according to wiki, android 3.0 supports 1366×768. Will be interesting to find out.

Thats unconfirmed...
Yeah, it really is an impressive display. I'd really like to see a larger 1280x720 Super AMOLED PMP with a pixel pitch equal to the Retina display's, though. That resolution is one thing I loved about the iphone 4. I am on the captivate right now, and when a website is zoomed out, it looks like shit in comparision.
It's good for web browsing, however. The iPad is awkwardly 4:3 for the same reason. I have a Zune HD, which is 16:9, and browsing the web on it is kind of a pain in the ass because of the aspect ratio. You may see higher rez screens than what is currently used, but I don't think you'll see 960x640. 3:2 is a lame aspect ratio for something that pretends to be a media device.
Being able to decipher text before you zoom into it is advantageous. The touch precision on the new iPhone is also quite good, so you can click very small links with a very high amount of precision. Works out very well, actually.I get that the retina display is high dpi, but who actually reads websites fully zoomed out?
